Interesting forum, but the more I read, the more I get confused.
I visited Brazil last November, the Natal area and loved it. Now I am strongly considering selling my hotel in Portugal and moving to Brazil.

Would someone be so kind as to let me have their opinions on a few points.

The Portuguese language is not a big problem for me, it is not good, but I can get by and I’m sure with usage it will in improve, I don’t get much chance to speak it here, everything on the Algarve is English, English and more English.

If I buy a hotel or restaurant in Brazil that costs over 50,000 US$ will this entitle me to a permanent visa?

What kind of investment would be involved to buy a business that would generate enough money to live on in Brazil.

Would it be an option to only invest a small amount in a business, enough to get a permanent visa, then invest more in a high interest bank account, what kind of interest rate could be expected from such an account.

Basic questions I know, but any responses would be greatly appreciated.

Roger, as far as the investment visa goes. At first, you will get a temporary visa and then, if met the requirements of the Law,i.e., productive business, over a period of time, you will get your permanent residence.

Since you are in the hotel business, I would suggest to keep it that way here in Brazil.

Should you need further information, feel free to contact me.

If you buy an already existing establishment I would guess you get about 4-5% of the invested amount as income pr month. This is of course VERY average and only based on internet research.

A fixed interest fund (which should be prety safe) will give you about 13-18% interest a year.
