What is the typical hourly labor rate in Rio for various construction/renovation jobs such as electricians, plumbers, painters, and other construction laborers? Please respond if you've hired people for these types of jobs.

I had all of the water tubulation replaced in my apartment in Laranjeiras. This took 5 days and I paid R$500. I paid for materials myself. So my answer is R$100 per day!

Local knowledge is essential: we asked around for a good reccommendation from my Carioca wife's friends. I would imagine a newcomer with no network of contacts would struggle to get the best prices and workmanship by just looking in the Yellow Pages!. We also had a made-to-measure kitchen fitted for nearly half the price quoted by others, because the contractor is based in Minas (where his overheads are much less) but works in Rio when requested, yet who would know this unless someone told you?
