Radar Schools

by

Beginning at age 17 in April '42, I attended radio schools operated by the Signal Corps in Paducah and then Lexington KY. I wound up at Lexington Signal Depot at Avon KY studying Radar fundamentals and repair. In the last weeks we were exposed to the SCR 268, 270-and-271. Yes the entire effort was termed "Top Secret". Mention of the word "Radar" outside the Depot was a definite no-no!

After basic training I went to Camp Murphy FL for training on the SCR-602, a British designed unit, housed in a tent, and planned for air drop in forward areas. Upon arrival in England in Dec. '43 we operated along coastal areas tracking in-coming V-1 (Buzz) bombs.

We were issued new truck-mounted units prior to D-Day and joined Patton at Avranches for his dash across France. The Luftwaffe was insignificant, but we learned that by proper siting we could detect large accumulations of metal, i.e. Tanks, motor pools, ammo, and POL dumps. Patton jumped at this information to destroy or capture the booty. We were termed "Pattons Eyes".

I need photos or sketches of the 602 for an article I hope to have published in WW-II Magazine. Please advise if I can be of help to you, or vice-versa.
