Nikita wasn’t sure what happened. She remembered strapping Lisa securely into the back seat of her car and walking around to the driver’s side and getting in. She also remembered strapping herself in while listening to Lisa chatter about her day. She remembered laughing at something Lisa said about her friend’s baby brother Jimmy while starting the car. Everything was fine. She listened as Lisa chattered on about what she wanted them to do after dinner; she stopped at the junction, made sure all was clear before continuing on when a car came barrelling out of nowhere. There was no way to avoid a collision.

Her only concern was for Lisa in the back of the car, but she was still securely strapped in excitedly talking ‘a mile a minute’ for her it was an adventure. Nikita was about to get out to check the damages to the car when the driver and passenger of the other car came hurrying over asking if everything was all right.

She remembered hearing the screeching of tires and looking back to see an ambulance stopping directly behind her car, she thought nothing of it until she felt the slight sting in her neck before her world went black to the sound of Lisa screaming.

Her head felt awful, and her mouth was dry. She slowly tried to open her eyes and focus on her surroundings, but a sharp shooting pain at her temple told her that may not be such a good idea yet. She tried to shift her position and couldn’t prevent the groan that found its way to her lips. Soft whimpers nearby slowly penetrated her subconscious and she slowly opened her eyes ignoring the pain at her temple.

“Nikita, Nikita, wake up. Wake up please!” She struggled to sit up and had to brace herself when Lisa threw her arms around her neck, tears streaming down her face. “I was so scared, I couldn’t get you to wake up. Are you ok?”

“I’m ok sweetheart”. Nikita pulled back from Lisa so that she could examine her; there were no obvious bruises on her that she could see, but that didn’t mean anything. “Did they hurt you Lisa?”

When Lisa shook her head in the negative Nikita breathed a sigh of relief and held her close, burying her face in her soft hair, not wanting to let her fear show. That they were unharmed so far was no guarantee for later. Her mind was working frantically trying to assess the situation and hopefully find a way out.

“Nikita, what did that man mean when he said Daddy will pay?”

“I don’t know sweetheart, I don’t know”. If only she could figure out what was going on.

“Damn! You were just supposed to grab the girl!” David shouted angrily. “Why couldn’t you just stick to the plan?”

“There was a slight delay and the lady got to the school before we did. We had no choice but to grab them both or wait until we had another opening”.

“I don’t like this one bit”. David fumed; turning at the sound of his wife approaching footsteps.

“David darling, you worry too much”. Elena said as she trailed on blood red manicured nail down his arm. “Everything will be taken care of, won’t it Perry?” Smiling at the man who entered the room with her.

For the life of him David could not figure out why his wife had involved Perry Bauer in the plan; he just didn’t trust him; something just didn’t gel right, he seemed shifty and who better to know a con man than he?

“Oh yes, everything will be taken care of. I promise you that. I might even have some fun doing it”. His answering smile did not reach his eyes and David felt a chill down his spine.

“Why, what’s in it for you?” David asked. He didn’t feel right about working with this man and wondered yet again why Elena had involved him.

“Revenge. Michael Samuelle will pay one way or the other”. David noticed how cold his eyes were as he focussed on the mirror that clearly showed him the captives. “Samuelle sure knows how to pick them doesn’t he?”

“What do you mean revenge?” Elena asked, eyes wide. “Do you know Michael?”

“Samuelle and I go back a long way, but don’t worry your pretty head about it. You said you wanted money and I’ll get you money”.

“I know, but I don’t want anyone hurt, do you understand?” Suddenly slightly wary of the gleam in his eyes.

“Don’t worry, I’ll handle it. You’ll get your money”.

He tried hard to hide his irritation, the little witch actually thought she was running things; what did she know about anything? Oh, but she was going to learn and soon. He turned on his heels and swiftly made his exit leaving a slightly miffed Elena and David watching his retreat.
