I lived in Scotland from January to April 1989 (specifically in Glasgow) and I remember seeing some Season 1 Hunter at a guy's flat once in a while. But as poor American college students, we had no TV (hell, we could barely afford to put our 5 pounds in the electricity meter every few days) and had to rely on our neighbors for television. But I can honestly say we hit more pubs than we did televisions.
But I do remember having a fit all through the spring of 1989, knowing I was missing Hunter!!! It was weird coming back to the U.S. and seeing "repeats" as my first-time episodes!
I'm glad to hear that the British can view U.S. videotapes. My roommate and I did a broadcast television (journalism) project and our professors allowed us to take our project home with us. It was a 30 minute documentary film about Scotland through American eyes. (Aye!) I've never seen it since we presented it to our professors in 1989 . . . no VCR here will play it. And I'm afraid to have it converted for fear it will be ruined.
Cheerio! You have a lovely country. I spent 2 weeks traveling by train through the U.K. It was absolutely the best time of my life!
