There is time compression software used on some syndicated shows to compress the running time down to approx 42 to 46 mins without commercials called "Lexicon." This is done without actually deleting any scenes from programs.
The series "Combat!" released on DVD by Image Entertainment has the episodes time compressed with Lexicon.
When A&E showed "The Fugitive" back in 1990 or so, they showed the program at a speeded up frame rate to compress a 51 min show to 46:30 or so.
Many episodes of Hunter have this Lexicon alteration as well (both on TBS & TVLand). You can see it in the episodes if the actors appear to move in a slightly "jerky" sped-up way. THe audiotrack has a rhythmic "beating" on sustained musical notes. Say "Ahhhhhh" while tapping on your throat. That's what it sounds like.
Hopefully the DVDs, though they will likely have the music alterations, will not have Lexicon used on them.
