OhmyGod, I can't believe there are people out there who have never heard of HUNTER! How old ARE you?!
Seriously, HUNTER is more or less your standard cop/buddy show, with the twists being that one partner has family connections he'd rather not have, and his partner is a
(deceptively) tiny little whisp of a woman you wouldn't want to piss off, because she kicks ass as well as her partner does. (Growing up it was something of an inspiration to see a petite woman who could do that.)
In the greater scheme of things, I believe this show has been a ground-breaker in many ways, not the least of which is how the lead female character, McCall, is written and portrayed. I think of McCall as a kind-of role-model for S.A. Dana Scully and other professional women that came later. (I also always harbored a secret suspicion that she was the neice of Edward McCall, a.k.a., THE EQUALIZER, but that's just my demented and TV-saturated mind at work. But then, for all I know, Scully is, indeed - as many have theorized - part of the Clan
MacLeod.... :-D)
The first season has more action and car chases, but starting
around second season (you can tell by McCall's haircut), they started dealing with more serious topics, yet still with enough of the humor that comes out of the great rapport to keep it fun, while adding a bit more depth.
Just watch out for McCall's suddenly appearing hobby of
knitting ("Million Dollar Misunderstanding," I think), and
some fun recurring characters (Garrett Morris, of SNL fame,
was especially great as Sporty James, and then there's Lenny
"The Legend" Dungsten, and Kitty...damn, can't recall her
name, but it's something very Irishy-sounding [anyone remember
the eps? "Shades" was one, but there was another before that],
oh, and a wonderfully-fun guest spot by Jonathan Banks in "The
Big Fall.").
But now I'm rambling, which should tell you how glad I am that they're running this show and that a whole bunch of newbies will get to see it!!!
"Goodnight Hunter, wherever you are!"
