(Part 1)
One Day before the Wedding
As Rick stood in the doorway of Charlie's office, he caught sight of his favorite brunette. “McCall, come here!”
Slightly startled by the loud command, Dee Dee looked up from the various items, which had accumulated on her desk. “What is it?!” She replied as loudly he had been. “I’m busy cleaning out my desk!”
“I wanna talk to you!”
She knew he wouldn’t leave her alone until she gave in to him; more or less pretending to be annoyed, she rolled her eyes at him. Letting out a deep sigh before leaving her desk, she walked toward the towering figure. Clad in dark blue pants, and a burgundy arrow shirt, Rick waited patiently as the raven-haired beauty, approached the office.
“Must you yell from across the room?” She asked.
“I don’t, now that you’re here.” He replied with a well-known grin. “Besides you were yelling too.”
Dee Dee raised an eyebrow. “Your bad habits are contagious.”
As she joined him in the office; Rick thought to himself, how cute she looked in her jeans and pink t-shirt. Anything to show off her figure, always made him smile.
“Alright, I’m here. What’s the big emergency?”
Rick pulled a chair up for her. “Sit down for a minute.”
While taking a seat, Dee Dee noticed Rick’s change of facial expression. “Hmm; seems like something serious.”
“Yeah, it is.” As Rick sat in the chair next to Dee Dee, he took a deep breath, exhaled deeply and began to explain. “Look. Remember, I told you to go and be with Alex and be happy because you told me that you love him?”
“Yeah, I remember that.”
Rick; without further hesitation and with all seriousness, forced his thoughts into words.
“Before you put one more thing in that box on your desk, I need to know; are you sure this….marrying Alex, is what you really want?”
“Wait a minute.” Dee Dee’s facial expression was that of confusion. “A couple of days ago, you were encouraging me to marry Alex, and now…. you’re trying to talk me out of it?”
“No, Dee Dee, that’s not what I’m doing. I just want you to be sure that marrying Alex isn’t something you’re rushing into.”
Still a little shocked by Rick’s question, Dee Dee replied. “It might seem sudden, but you know that he and I were very serious about one another before he left for Africa. When he came back last week, we both knew we should be married.”
Rick knew she wanted to be married, but this was moving too fast for him. “Right, Dee Dee. Last week.” He knew it wasn’t like her to make such rash decisions. “Are you sure that’s enough time? I mean, he was gone for over a year. He’s probably changed a lot within that time.” Time was the key word. He thought of how little time had passed, since he and Dee Dee were sharing a bed, and so much more.
Dee Dee had thoughts of her own on the subject. She knew it was fast doing, but she wanted it. “Rick. I know what I’m doing. Alex and I have known each other for eight years, and if we aren’t meant to be together he wouldn’t have come back for me.”
”So, you’re really in love with him?” Rick waited for the key words ‘in love’ to be repeated.
“Rick. I love Alex, and I want to marry him.”
He noticed a Dee Dee quickly looked away from him, and then back, as she answered the question. He knew her very well, and had serious doubts about her answer, especially when he didn’t hear the key words. Standing and leaning against Charlie’s desk, he added more of his thoughts. “Sadly, you and Steve never had a chance to have children. Maybe you think that marrying Alex will be your only opportunity of becoming a wife again and a mother for the first time. If you don’t act now, you might miss out. Right?”
“What?” While standing and placing a hand on her hip, Dee Dee shot Rick a look that he didn’t care much for. “Why are you saying this, Rick?”
Whether her look shot daggers or not, he was going to get his point across. “Dee Dee, I don’t think you really love Alex as much as you say you do, and I don’t want you to settle for this marriage as a last resort. I think you’re leaping into this thing, head first, without looking.” Rick stood up straight and put his hands in his pants pockets. The current look that Dee Dee was giving him was worst than the first, so he decided to brace himself for a slap across the face. Then he thought about it…..a fist to the eye would be more likely.
Dee Dee responded with both surprise and anger. “I cannot believe you said that!” She stood up and walked towards the window, then spun around with her questions fueled by anger. “What in the world is wrong with you?! Do you honestly think I can’t make a life altering decision, without your help?!” Her voice had increased in volume, but not so much as to get the attention of fellow officers. It did however; cause Rick to feel a little uncomfortable and he didn’t like that he’d upset her.
“Listen, Rick! I’ve decided it’s time to end this career, and begin the life I’ve been wanting for so long! I’m trying to be happy! Why, can’t you want that for me?!”
“I do want you to be happy!” Rick wasn’t sure of how to present his next sentence. I...It’s just……”
“It’s just what, Rick?!” Her eyes danced with the rhythmic swirl of thoughts, of what could make him say such hurtful things. Within seconds, it clicked. Her eyes were still, not really focused on anything; after she realized what may have sparked Rick’s line of questioning. She turned her eyes straight towards him, and as his eyes met hers. He wanted to look elsewhere, but couldn’t escape the hold, those hypnotic brown eyes had on him. He knew what she was thinking of asking him, but wouldn’t begin for her. With a furrowed brow; she walked up to him, to ask the question. “Is this about the decision we made three weeks ago?”
***
(Three weeks earlier)
Rick and Dee Dee were on the sofa at her house as the two had made plans the day before, to spend the evening watching an Alfred Hitchcock movie marathon. Rick had his arm across the back of the sofa, and Dee Dee’s head rested against his chest. Both were comfortable in matching gray t-shirts and sweat pants, with the Los Angeles police logo on the shirts. Rick had spent the night and brought his clothes in a duffle bag, along with other items for his stay. While getting dressed he and Dee Dee laughed about how their ESP, must be working since they’d unknowingly chosen the same attire.
At some points during the first movie, Rick was distracted by thoughts of Dee Dee and her lavender scented lotion. She had taken her shower, while Rick was still asleep, but he had just awaked, when she started to apply the lotion over her toned and shapely body. He couldn’t help but enjoy watching and commenting. “You know what? You can even make putting on lotion, look like an art form.” He gave her a sly grin, and she smiled and thanked him for the compliment. Rick sighed, blinked his eyes, and brought himself back to the present. They’d just seen Rear Window and the second movie, The Birds was about to start in five minutes. Before another minute could pass, Dee Dee figured that there was no sense in putting it off the discussion any longer. She’d been wrestling with the idea of telling Rick how she felt, and it was really getting to her. She had to tell him what was on her mind….now. She sat up, while turning the TV off with the remote control. “Rick, we need to talk.”
“Turning off Hitchcock? This must be important.”
“Yeah, it is.” Dee Dee took a deep breath, before she spoke. She could feel herself start to tense up, but she knew she had to speak her mind. “We’ve been having coffee… (Dee Dee used her fingers, to gesture quotation marks in the air) ...for over seven months now, and ...”
“Mmm,…Coffee.” Rick cut her off, with a wicked grin, and a response to match. “I think I’m addicted to you like most people are to the caffeine in coffee. I can’t seem to get enough. As a matter of fact, you owe me a free refill, from last night.”
To her surprise, Dee Dee was suddenly lying on her back, as Rick had moved his body over hers. The soft kisses on her neck were creating distraction, from the conversation she intended to have with him. She was letting her mind drift, with thoughts of the night before. The day had been filled, with nothing but paper work. No car chases, or shootouts. Just mounds of folders and papers on the desks of McCall and Hunter. They were looking forward to getting away from their duties, and to a more relaxing atmosphere. Rick followed Dee Dee home from work, as planned. When they got to the house, Dee Dee went into the kitchen, to get snacks for the two of them. She called to Rick, as he sat in front of the television. “I’ve got apple cobbler, with oatmeal crumb topping. You want some?”
Before her sentence was complete; Rick had come into the kitchen; wrapping his arms around her, from the back. “Let me guess. Frozen desserts section?” He was sure to put emphasize on the word frozen. He knew it was definitely part of the Dee Dee McCall, four basic food groups.
Dee Dee giggled at the remark. “You know me so well.”
Rick smiled, and agreed to the dessert. “Sure. I’ll have some.” He turned Dee Dee around, to face him, and with a childlike innocence, asked a question. “Will you feed it to me?” He had an agenda… and she knew it.
Dee Dee had an idea. One she figured would satisfy their hungry….for more than just apple cobbler. She tilted her head back, looked into his eyes and with one of her sexiest smiles, she answered him. “Yes. I’ll feed you. Now, go to the bedroom. I’ll meet you there in a couple of minutes.”
Rick didn’t question his instructions, but wondered what she was up too. He knew whatever it was, it would be enjoyable. With a sly grin, a salute, and a “Yes ma’am” he quickly made his way to the bedroom. After about two minutes. Dee Dee appeared in the bedroom, with a slightly warmed plate of the apple dessert. Rick was lying on the bed, waiting for what she had in store. He had taken everything off, except for his pants. He figured he’d leave something for her to remove from his body. He really enjoyed how she’d sometimes undo the zipper with her teeth. Dee Dee placed the bowl on the nightstand, and then proceeded to undress. She removed the red pantsuit; revealing the red satin bra and panties.
Rick had a smile, and a comment. “Your mom must have always told you, to wear nice underwear, in case you’re ever in an accident.” Dee Dee laughed a little, while tossing a pillow at him. She joined him on the bed; lying on her back, and to his amazement, emptied the contents of the bowl, onto her stomach. The cobbler was warm, but, not enough to burn her skin. She made sure of that. Rick could only watch her actions. He didn’t dare question her motive.
“It’s time for dessert.” She said with a seductive look in her eyes. She took the spoon, and scooped up a small amount of cobbler from her stomach; feeding it to Rick. This was something new to him. She’d feed him before; with a spoon, fork, or her fingers. Never like this. It was so teasing…so enticing. He liked it. He liked it a lot. As he lay on the right side, of this beautiful woman, that was spoon feeding him warm apple cobbler….using her taut abdomen as a plate, he couldn’t help but wonder how he got so lucky. Dee Dee placed a small wedge of apple in his mouth. He moved closer to her; allowing her to take a bite of the fruit slice, that was perched between his teeth. She took half of the apple slice in her mouth. As she was about to lick away a tiny bit of the syrupy filling, from her lower lip, Rick saved her the trouble. He traced her bottom lip with his tongue, from left to right until he reached the sweet droplet. Dee Dee felt that his gesture was the perfect prelude, to what was next. She placed the spoon on the nightstand, and let her index finger glide across her stomach; collecting samples of the apple dessert. She then, ran her finger across Rick’s lips. He licked his lips, and then lightly sucked the finger that provided the treat.
“You’re a big boy now. Why don’t you feed yourself?” She extended her arms above her head, allowing easy access to the “plate”. Rick was anxious to finish his dessert. He loved kissing every inch of this beautiful body, and had planned to do so, within minutes. He let his tongue slide along her stomach, enjoying the taste of sweetened apples, as well as the natural sweetness of Dee Dee’s skin. The combination made for a delectable feast. Dee Dee arched her back, enjoying the feel of Rick’s tongue glide over her stomach. After he’d cleaned the “plate”, Rick moved to place his lips upon Dee Dee’s. The kisses were soft and gentle. Rick added kisses to her neck, making a pathway to her shoulders. He unfastened the hook on her bra, quite easily, since it opened from the front. Placing kissing on her breasts was his next move. Dee Dee sighed with pleasure, from the stimulation she was receiving. He slowly began to make his way down her body again, with more kisses, and the gliding of his tongue. Before he reached the point just below her navel, he moved to kiss her lips again. “I love you Dee Dee. I love you so much.”
Rick could see the beginnings of a smile on her face.
“Dee Dee. I’m in love with you.” Rick was very serious about his statement, and Dee Dee knew it.
“Oh, Rick.” Her smile was growing. “I know you love me….that you’re in love with me. I’m in love with you too, and I’m so glad I have you in my life.” She only needed to say three more words. “I need you Rick.” They kissed in a most passionate manner. Their tongues, were exploring each others mouths, both inside, and out. Dee Dee motioned for Rick to lie on his back. After he did, she proceeded to straddle his body and as he’d thought she would, unzipped his pants with her teeth. He remembered being so surprised, when she’d done this for the first time, about a month ago. He raised his hips up, just enough for her slide his pants and underwear off of his body. She stood up on the bed, as he reached up, sliding her red satin panties off of her body. He had seen her naked body, many times over the past seven months, but he was always in awe, of her beautiful body, as well as her beautiful mind. Being so intelligent was an added bonus, which made her so special. She was beautiful, smart, sexy, and could handle a gun and a car, better than a lot of men he knew. He never had a second thought, when it came to having her watch his back, in the most dangerous of situations. He knew she felt the same way and the trust they shared, was incomparable. She made it easy for him to fall in love with her.
Dee Dee knelt down on the bed, and began “writing” I love you, in the center of Rick’s chest, with her right index finger.
“I love you too.” Rick responded, with a smile. He reached up, caressing her arm as she “drew” a heart on his stomach. Straddling his body; Dee Dee kissed him softly on the lips, as her dark wavy hair resting upon Rick’s chest, as she let the trail of kisses flow down the side of his neck, and shoulders. He in turn kissed the tip of her nose; before adding to her chin, and cheeks. He brushed her hair away from her face, letting the length of it, fall over her left shoulder. She bent down, letting their lips meet; initiating a long, slow, sultry kiss. Rick gently turned Dee Dee over onto her back, never breaking the kiss. The tingling sensations ran throughout their bodies, indicating the passion inside their hearts, souls, and minds, was growing stronger with every passing second. Rick made sure, to pay attention to more of Dee Dee’s body. She giggled from the tickling, his tongue provided as he flicked at her navel. The flicking became more of a French kiss…navel to tongue, causing Dee Dee to let out a sigh of enjoyment. After moving his face over hers, he kissed her once more; stared into her eyes, not needing to say a word, as she knew it was time to move further. Dee Dee bent her knees, and parted her legs, as an invitation for Rick to join her in what would be an extreme duration of bliss. He accepted the invitation, and lowered himself to the proper position, and entered her. He was slow, and gentle, as he always had been with her. His actions always made her feel loved, and safe. She felt that it was right….perfect. Just the way it was supposed to be. Immediately, they were able to find the perfect rhythm. Dee Dee let out soft moans of pleasure; lightly digging her nails into Rick’s back. He didn’t mind at all. It was slightly painful…most arousing. Rick also had moans of ecstasy, between the soft biting on Dee Dee’s shoulder. As with her nails in Rick’s back, she found the little nibbles, to be arousing. As the lovemaking grew more intense, the couple instinctively knew, they’d reach their climatic destination, simultaneously. Dee Dee tightened her legs around Rick’s waist, as the most intensifying moment of their lovemaking, came into full bloom.
After it was over, Rick lay on his side of the bed; pulling Dee Dee closer to him. The two lay silently, holding one another, as the rain began to fall. It was their lullaby. They fell into a blissful sleep; each knowing that the partnership….work, and romantic, was everything it should be. Or was it?
***
(Back to Saturday afternoon)
Dee Dee didn’t care if The Birds or any other Hitchcock movie was starting. She was falling deeper into the thought, as Rick maneuvered his right hand under her shirt. She wasn’t wearing a bra, so he had easy access to the two mounds of flesh that formed her exquisite breasts. She sighed at his gentle touch, and felt herself becoming more aroused. All of a sudden, Rick heard a single work.
“Wait!”
“Huh?” Rick quickly sat up; surprised by Dee Dee’s exclamation. “Why? What’s wrong?”
Dee Dee sat up. “ Talking is what we’re supposed to be doing. Not…. this .” She sat up, pulling her shirt down, as she made herself more comfortable to talk.
Rick could see the seriousness, in her face, and became more serious himself. “Right, I’m sorry about that.” He leaned into the corner of the sofa, to make himself more comfortable. “You were saying…?”
“I want to talk about us. How we’ve been together for over three months, and I feel that what we have is really serious.”
Rick nodded his head in agreement. “Yeah, I feel the same way…you know that.”
“Well, as for the future, you know that I want to get married and have kids, as soon as the opportunity comes.” She paused, to check Rick’s face, for any reaction, but he just continued to look at her with an intent expression. She continued. “We both have different views on that subject. I want the whole package ...soon, and you don’t.”
Rick; expression not changed, sat on the edge of the sofa. “Dee Dee. That’s not exactly true. Marriage is something I’m interested in…especially marrying you.”
Dee Dee almost blushed at the thought, because she had pictured their wedding day, many times.
Rick continued. “But you still don’t want to marry a cop again. Am I right?”
When Rick said again, he was referring to Dee Dee’s first husband, Steve. He was killed in the line of duty, at the age of thirty. She’d told him a long time ago, that she couldn’t go through worrying about what might happen to her husband, if he too, was a police officer. She couldn’t relive that hellish nightmare again.
“Yes, you’re right.” Dee Dee answered. “Now let me ask you something. You still don’t want to have kids, do you? Am I right?”
Before Rick answered, he shifted his eyes to the floor for a second, then back to Dee Dee.
“Yes. You’re right too… to a certain extent. I still don’t want to have kids right away. I want to continue with my career, you know....move up the ladder. I really want to make Lieutenant and maybe even Captain. But somewhere along the way, I would like to add Father, to my list of titles. I just don’t know when.”
Dee Dee thought about the fact, that Rick was already a father. While he was in Vietnam, he’d fallen in love with a young girl, and she became pregnant with his child; a son. “What about Ben? You told me before, that you wanted to marry Lin Dun. You didn’t know she was pregnant with Ben, when you were in Vietnam, but you planned to bring her to the states. Would you have not become a cop then? You would have had a wife and child to support. What would you have done?”
Rick hesitated before answering, then told her what he felt was the truth “At the time, I just wanted to bring Lin Dun to the states, and have her be my wife. I really loved her, and knew I could save her from all the tragedies of the war. Then Ben would have come along, and I would have done everything possible to love, and raise him like a good father should. I guess I would have found some nine-to-five job, and lived in the suburbs somewhere.” He sighed, as he thought about what had been, and what could have been. “I think after what I saw in Vietnam, made me want to save other people. Being a cop gave me that opportunity. Now that I am a cop, things are completely different. You know how I feel now.”
Dee Dee moved to sit on the arm of the chair, next to the front door before replying solemnly. “Yes. Yes, I do know how you feel now. We both know what we want in the future, but it’s not the same things. So, what are we going to do?”
With a somber look, Rick walked over and stood beside her. He crossed his arms, and lowered his head in an effort to prepare for the worst. “I don’t know what to do. Although I get the feeling, that you have a solution. A solution, which I’m sure I won’t like very much.”
“Yes I do have a solution; one which neither of us will like very much.” With her eyes tearing up, Dee Dee told Rick the solution the questions at hand. “I think we should stop seeing each other…romantically.”
Rick lifted his head, and stood up a little straighter with a strong look of surprise on his face. “I had a feeling that was coming, but, I was hoping it couldn’t come down to that. Are you sure you want to do this? Are you really sure, Dee Dee?” He wanted her to think it over and watched to see if she showed any signs of doing so. She nodded her head, and spoke a soft “yes”.
He knelt down, to be closer to her face because for his next questions, he wanted to make complete eye contact. “So, if a man…your Mr. Right, steps up to you tomorrow and offers to make your dreams come true, you’ll go with him? You’ll leave everything and follow him to wherever he says?”
Dee Dee thought for a second, and then answered the question. “If I found myself in love with him… I’d do it.”
Unhappy with what he heard, Rick stood and walked to the other side of the room for some space. “We were together just last night.” His voice became more elevated with anger as he continued. “Last night! Oh, hell, Dee Dee! We were close to making love a few minutes ago! Now, you say you want to break up! Is it really worth throwing away, what we have?!”
Dee Dee didn’t want to get into a heated argument, so she remained calm and kept her voice at moderate tone while she answered him. “At this moment, I don’t see any other solution. I mean, not wanting the same things in life, can do a lot of damage to a relationship. Don’t look at it, at throwing something away. It’s just that we’re putting it aside. Rick I love you.”
“Dee Dee, I love you too. But I can’t help but feel hurt over this. It’s a major step in the opposite direction I want to go.”
Dee Dee hated the thought of causing him pain, but for the moment she could help it. “I don’t want to intentionally hurt you. It’s very hard for me too, but I just need to do this for me.”
Rick sat down on the sofa, and let out a huge sigh of disappointment. He wanted her to be happy, and if this was the way to do it …so be it. Though, he was in no hurry to agree. He lowered his head; rubbing the back of his neck with his right hand, as if to massage away the solution Dee Dee had suggested. He looked up, and saw the sincerity in her eyes. He let out defeated sigh, and began to speak. “I really hate to end what we have here, but maybe you’re right, and this can be a mutual agreement. At this time, I know that I can’t give you what you’re wanting. Maybe someday, we can come to another mutual agreement and pick up where we left off.” He had a hard time believing that he’d actually said those words, but deep down, he knew it was for the best.
Dee Dee quietly replied while keeping her tears at bay. “Yeah, I’d like that. I really would.”
As Rick stood up to leave, Dee Dee also stood. They looked into each other’s eyes, knowing that the hurt, was strong for them both. He held back his tears, but his eyes were burning, from both sadness and disappointment. Dee Dee’s eyes were full of water, until the tears began to roll down her cheeks. Rick cupped his hands around Dee Dee’s face, and asked a question. “Are you absolutely sure, that this is what we need to do?” He was hoping for Dee Dee to have a change of heart.
After heaving a sigh of inner sadness, she replied. “I wish we could keep seeing each other. I really, really do. But right now, I feel that this is the best thing. Maybe we’ll come to want the same things, sooner than we know. But until then, this is the way it has to be. Who knows…maybe this time next year, we’ll be back together.” Thinking of the days to come, Dee Dee asked Rick questions, that she could have easily asked herself. “Do you think you’ll be okay with us going in to work on Monday? I mean, under the circumstances?”
Rick answered solemnly. “It’s just something I’ll have to get used to…no, choice.”
Dee Dee replied in the same manner….solemnly. “Yeah, I guess the same goes for me.”
“I love you Dee Dee” He bent down to kiss her on the lips, but remembered that things had changed between them, and kissed her on her cheek instead.
“I love you too Rick. I’ll talk to you later.”
****
After Rick left, Dee Dee lay on the sofa, holding a throw pillow, which held the soft scent of Rick’s cologne. Once again, her tears began to flow freely, as she hated the thought of not being in Rick’s arms anymore. She knew she’d see him at work; sitting across from her at his desk, riding with him in the junk pile on wheels, he used as a car, and while sitting in Charlie’s office, trying to explain why they didn’t go by the book, while solving their latest case. They’d still be together, but their whole perspective on the relationship had changed. It was one of the reasons they avoided crossing the line, and becoming more than work partners because they knew that the pain of a breakup would hurt too much. Dee Dee couldn’t help but wonder if she’d made the right decision. Maybe she should have held on to Rick. It wasn’t etched in stone that he would die in the line of duty and he did say he was interested in marriage, and kids. He just didn’t know when. He could wait ten years from now and start a family, but Dee Dee knew she wanted that life much, much sooner than that. Her eyes were tired, and so was she. With tears trickling over the bridge of her nose, she eventually fell asleep on the sofa, still clutching the cologne scented pillow.
Rick didn’t go home, right away as he felt that a drive might help the knotted feeling, in the pit of his stomach go away. He found himself driving aimlessly through the downtown area while the red, yellow, and green colors of the traffic lights seemed to blend together. He wasn’t aware if he was obeying the traffic laws or not, and it was made known by another.
“Hey move it! The light is green!” The guy in the black Jeep alerted Rick that he was holding up traffic behind him. After making a clear pathway, he knew he shouldn’t be driving while his mind was occupied by that damned agreement he’d made with Dee Dee. No need in putting his life, or the lives of others in danger. He made sure to concentrate on his driving, long enough to get home safe and sound.
After getting home, Rick got a beer out of the refrigerator, settled into his recliner, and turned on the television. It wasn’t on so much to watch, as it was to interrupt the conversation with Dee Dee that continued in his mind. -“I think we should stop seeing each other romantically.”- That sentence was set to play and rewind, on the machine known as Rick Hunter’s brain, for all eternity. He cursed himself, for not giving Dee Dee what she wanted. He told himself he could do it. “Just end one half of your life, known as your career, and make her happy. Give it up. Don’t be a cop anymore. Be the husband Dee Dee wants, needs, and deserves. If you really love her…..do it.” He couldn’t do it. His life as a cop was just as important to him, as having a family was to Dee Dee. He knew if she couldn’t accept him as he was, then it was right to break things off.
If that was true, why was the pain flooding his broken heart, telling a different story?
