Hey bro I think Patroleum engineering is the best..I'm not studying it but my bros studying it and says that its really on demand overseas.....So u can just study this then apply overseas and they'll easily get u..

Surf the net for more information esp on the trade itself. If you're living in Lae, visit the Engineering dept and make an appointment to see a lecturer who is willing to help point you in the right direction or see your guidiance officer.

Bro, i don't think petroleum engineering is offered anywhere in PNG, but best would be to go into mechanical engineering at UNITECH or better still geology or geophysics at UPNG; from there the transistion into pet engineering would be much easier. Or if there are opportunities to study abroad, that would be even better coz then you could go straight into a petroleum eng. degree course. There are few unis in Australia that offer this course. My profession is in Petroleum Geology, which itself is not that bad as an alternative and also in high demand, I might add.

it doesn't matter if your a girl!! Mining is for all genders, currently we have 2 girls doing mining to my knowledge they will b the first females to ever graduate out of unitech with a degree in mining.
So if your a girl theres nothin stopping you from joining!!!

for your informaiton, those 2 ladies will not be the first, there has being a couple gradustes and i am one of them. Mining Engineeringing is good and as long as you have your priorities right you can make it through.

Buddy, I wanted to be a laywer but ever since I became a mining student I have visited 1/2 the minesites in PNG and am currently doing my industrial in Porgera.
You won't even finish your final year and you'll have companies begging you to join their engineering team.

Buddy i am really interested in this course but my parents don't want me to study this course because they say i am a female and if i get this course i'll be working for other people all my life cos i can't really do my own business with that knowledge.......please help me with some advice so i can defend myself. In fact i took the entrance exams and i passed it but because of that i am taking up electrical engineering now but i am not really happy with that cos that's not what i like but i just want to impress them. I am planning to shift to mining after next year since all engineering courses here in my school have the same curriculum for the foundation year . Please i need your advice mate.....

Being a mining engineer doesn't mean u have to work underground, there are two sections to our job; Open pit mining and Underground mining.I'm currently attached to the openpit Drill and blast section, all the work that I do such as loading explosives and blasting huge amounts of rocks, I see that a girl can do wat I'm doing. As a girl u have to be prepared to be dirty!!
Also, if ur planning to switch courses next year than ma advice to u is that u kam early to school, probably 2 days b4 orientation week and bring the matter up with the admin.

mate you have to know that there are many sections in the field of mining engineering: D&B is one of them n mine planning is another one, you also have other sections such as dispatch, etc...so don't think that D&B is a foreman's job..u don't expect the foreman to do the Drill n Blast Pattern designs now do u....
Just a little background info for you..after graduating during the first few months in the field you will be attached with the training department n u will be doing all the dirty jobs that are done in the mine site...after u have completed every other sections in your training scedule then you will start to do a real engineer's job....hey the cool thing about this is you will even learn how to operate those huge mining trucks.....
well i guess this is the little info I can give u right now but if u need any more info just let us know...
Been there done that....

Anonymous,
I am really offended by your comments with respect to D&B. Believe me, what is planning and scheduling in relation to D&B? Experience in D&B ( an uttermost component to overall - actual production i.e ore being hauled to the ROM) is an ultimate prerequisite if you are EVER to be a planning/schedule engineer.
I'll give you an idea. If you ever applied for a planning/scheduling role and say, your CV had a blank spot in relation to your experiences in D&B ................... only a fool will consider your CV.
Send an email to some of your underground friends in Porgera and find out where the D&B position places itself. Everyone I knew who worked on this post, in a very short period grew a few grey hairs. With D&B comes things such a Stope Atlases and compiling a Stope Atlas with pin-point accuracy takes 1-2 months.
D&B is not just designing holes and blowing them up............it's an art that will make you a better and competent planner or scheduling engineer (mining).

Bata...forget what the others are saying...just take mining engineering.
As long as we have our gold mines here in png, there will still be a job for you.. Gold is the only comodity that is not getting affected by the global economical crisis.
cheers

trupla toktok....I heard that some mines in Aussie and Canada are winding down ops.
And many minning engineers are on the streets.
Not long most of our mining engineer exports to overseas will be back here walking the streets.
Its reality and its gonna happen sooner or later.
We'll just have to wait and see.

If your planning to be a minning engineer all your life than thats up to you, the so-called assumtion that is made that "when mining winds down overseas most of us will be roaming the streets" is total BULL S#$T!!!
I'm 27 years old and I have a oilpalm plantation in West new britain and a cocoa and coconut buying business in rabaul plus 3 buses that are going up and down the highlands hihgway, I know most of my collegues are millionaires in thier own rights.
M not boasting but just showing the opportunities available to you if you take up this course, must of us miners started bussinesses during the first 3 years of our career in the industry!
Were not always going to be mine engineers!!

Wirelus...remember these (eng) are bunch of brillant minds, if it's not engineering, I believe they will still have a place in the global world-their brains will do the talking....it goes for all the proffessionals - give them credit, they gave it all to be in the market...who else will take that courage to step out of the comfort zone, venturing into the unknown with their new fam, taking what the local Uni have made them to be - they have prove, we belong in the global world and can be marketable...I am sure PNG will be happy to welcome their experience and knowledge, it will be childish to think like you!

Hey all, I'm a female and want to take up engineering(petroleum exploration)...what are the possibilities/setbacks a female might encounter in a male-dominated field as this? Thanks in advance...

There is no barrier between male and female in any job whether it involves being a mining engineer, astronaut, politician, etc................
I heard that there are females taking up mining courses at UNITECH so I do not really see what the obstacle is. As long as you got the brains. go for it.

Are There enough qualified Lecturers in the Mining Department?

Iam thinking of sponsoring my small bro to do mining but I heard there are no qualified academic staff members with PhDs and Masters degree to teach. Those that were there have resigned or have left. I dont want my boy to be taught by a first degree holder who has been no professional experienc or higher degree.
Can anyone in the know please update.
