Aging with grace Part 2

Hi

got some time since it is sunday. Thought I should continue with the other veteran actresses. Let me write about Gui Ya Lei today.

Gui Ya Lei - an amazing character actress. She did not have the beauty of actresses like Li Li Hua, Tang Pao Yun or Chen Chen. But she is such a wonderful actress. One of the top notch Taiwanese actresses till today. She started catching the audience attention in Home in Taipei where she played the dutiful wife of Ke Chun Hsiong. Then she was cast as lead actress in Qiong Yao's Ting Yuan Sheng Sheng which shot her to fame. She was also a favorite of Liu Jia Chang back in the late 60s. He cast her as lead actress in "Ji Yao wei ni Huo Yi Tian" which featured great songs from Liu and performed by You Ya. I remembered that Liu paired with Gui in this movie, which was a hit because of the title song. Gui also starred in Liu's big Chinese New Year movie "Yi Jia Ren" or All in the family, also starring Judy Ong, Wang Ping and Tang Pao Yun. Gui is so suitable as a hardworking and less glamorous housewife. When Chen Chen, and the 2 Lins came into the scene, Gui found herself moving on to mother or aunty roles. She appeared opposite Chelsia Chan in "Ai Ching Shan Ji Tiao" and "Yen Er Gui" and as mother of Zhang ying Chen in the movie "Chu Lian Feng Pao" starring opposite Liu Wen Zhen. She also starred as the mother of Lin Ching Hsia in "Sha Tan De Yue Liang". She also starred in a few Qiong Yao movies playing the mother roles, such as "Ju Shan Liang Yi Yi" starring Ru Xiu Ling and "Burn Phoenxi Burn" starring Lin Ching Hsia. She won her second Golden Horse award for best supporting actress in Didi's diary, which also won Tien Niu Best actress award in that same year. Gui starred in some war related movies like "Jong Guo Nu Bing" and "Diary of a lady soldier". She also appeared in one of the last movies from Liu Jia Chang, called "Feng Sui Shan Shi Nian" costarring Chen Chen, Chin Han and Ke Chun Hsiong. There are too many of her movies to name here, but she has always played important pivotal roles in those movies, without her, those movies would lose some of its shine. Gui has never stopped as we moved on to the 80s and 90s. One of her memorable roles are "Jin Tian Bu Huey Jia" costarring Sylvia Zhang and Du Der Wei, as well as "Eat Drink Man Woman". But most impressive of all, is the movie "Wedding Banquet" which won her another best supporting actress award at the Golden Horse Ceremony, alongside Lang Hsiong, who sadly passed away not long after. Till today, Gui has been active in Taiwanese TV series. We saw her in Qiong Yao's TV series like "Ching Ching Her Bian Cao" and "Chi Chong Men" starring Liu Xue Hua. Kudos to Gui Ya Lei, without her, Taiwanese movies would not have been so memorable.

I hope I have not been too long winded. I am just excited talking about this amazing Taiwanese actress Gui Ya Lei, who has stretched her career from the 60s to the 21st century, always trying new roles, taking on new challenges, carving her 2nd spring. I hope we will see more of this evergreen actress Gui Ya Lei - truly a blossoming Pei Lei. Thank you Gui Ya Lei, big sister Gui for your achievements and memories you brought us.

Rgds
