Response to Granite Peak, Montana
I just found that trip report a couple of days ago, myself.
It is an intriguing route. Two things:
1) If the amount of boulder-hopping is limited (i.e. by using their recommendation to follow the Sky Top drainage), then camp might become an even closer distance to the summit than Lone Elk Lake. I think Sky Top Lakes might even be plausible, for the first day.
2) This has been a record-snowfall winter season. Leaving in late summer/ early fall might be preferred, to allow for easier access.
