Craziest Summit yet 3/24/05

Response to Clingman's Dome, Tennessee (6,643 Feet)

Continuing our road trip of the South, we arrived here on the morning of the 23rd. We drove the the beautiful Great Smokey Mountains to the summit road to discover that it was not opened until the 31st. Unfettered, we pulled the road bikes down from the car and saddled up. We rode up the summit road and stopped constantly to push our bikes through unmelted snow (including about a half-mile section that sucked). We arrived at the parking lot and actually pushed/rode our bikes up the trail to the summit. It was totally sweet. The ride back down was also awesome and we were getting quite a few wierd looks from the AT people that we saw on the way back down. Great summit, beautiful day, and we were off to get VA highpoint (even though we didn't in the end).
