I am new here but have spent days reading the mail.

Being from Scotland the tawse was used at my school. The best teacher we ever had for this was in primary 6. Mrs Tanner (Good name!) She was in her early 30's with light hair. Really nice unless you upset her.

I remember seeing the class bully strapped by her. It was late in the afternoon when she realised that he had not done any work that afternoon. She called him out and went to her desk for the belt. He two tail lochgelly was always in VERY good condition. I am not sure how she kept it like that as she used it so much. This boy was tuff but you could see his eyes watering at the thought of it. He had to hold both hands out, crossed. I cannot remember how many strokes he got but I have never seen anything like it. Not sure if she worked out. I know she was quite into sports. The power she had was quite something. He was soon in tears anyway.

Does anyone else have any scottish school tales? Are there still any girls on here who were punished in Scotland?

I would also love to hear from anyone punished in school in England. Be good to hear the difference.

there was 1 bloke but he is BANNED for useing foul languidge.

An expert on Anglo-Scots differences once told me that you can tell a joke in a London pub and everyone laughs their heads off, but in Glasgow they might not laugh at all.

I wasn't impressed with his supposed expertise because it was obvious to me that if you tell a joke in a London pub they can't hear it in Glasgow!

Nonetheless, I believe there were significant differences in CP techniques either side of the border and I await further postings with interest.

I should perhaps say that I never got the belt myself. Saw it used a lot from Primary 5 up until it was banned in 3rd year.

I was however spanked in primary school by the headmistress and in P2 our teacher would regulary smack boys and girls in front of the class. Sometimes OTK and sometimes with a gym shoe. Quite often we were put in the corner after.

I am surprised that the gym shoe was used in Scotland. I always thought that only hand punishments were given - a dangerous practice in my opinion, but I suppose that for most people it eliminated the sexual element.
