great works of fiction

Sandra and Denise and, let it be said, several other contributors to this site have great imaginations. Like "Sandra" and "Denise" I attended school in Ireland. Corporal punishment was never used when I was at school. Also I am sure that in Britain the caning of girls was so rare as to be almost non-existent.

I would award the Whitbread prize for fiction to Alice who supposedly was a teacher who supposedly took girls' knickers down before caning them.

Dear Muireann,

Your post was very super! It would be interesting to know which contributors to this site you consider to have great imaginations. Some of us have been here so long that we have become institutionalised and our critical faculties are not all that we might wish them to be.

I am sorry that you were not fortunate enough to attend a school where corporal punishment was a sanction, but can assure you that girls were punished in this way. It is (as Fran would say) a matter of public record.

With kind regards,

Robin
