I am sorry that I am unable to assist with your enquiry, but I have learnt, through e-mail correspondence, that a member of the clique has in their possession a photograph of Miles and Steff relaxing together on Brighton Pier.
Would he/she be prepared to share this picture with our readers?

No, Steff. Miles does not wear spectacles, as you well know. Here is the picture to which Karen referred:
I am delighted to see that Miles has lost none of the sartorial elegance for which he was famed in downtown East Grinstead.

It’s good to see some real British beefcake.
Miles doesn’t look too bad either.

Re: When Men Were Men
March 8 2003, 6:33 PM
There is some confusion here as it's not clear whether we are to treat the man in the light coloured suit as a human being with a right hand and a left hand, or as a object in a photograph.
More specifically, does " on the right hand side of the man in the light coloured suit" mean on his right (i.e. on the left of his image from our point of view) or on the right of his image (i.e. to his left)?

The Hairpin does not have a beard

Mr. Reid, the man in the light coloured suit, should be treated as a human being, unlike several other members of staff at William Penn.
Sid was right.

May 24 2003, 9:11 AM
I am very grateful to Gillian for posting the pictures of Christine Keeler under the ‘News from the Darby and Joan Club’ thread, but are they permanent?
Does anyone know why the pictures from this thread have disappeared? Can we blame Carl and his mats?

Dear Carl and Mats,
Your photographs page is an outstanding piece of graphic design. It is distinctive without being ostentatious, exclusive without being elitist.
Congratulations on producing something that will bring pleasure to most of our readers. There is absolutely no need for you to be pised off.
Hugs and fuggs,

Thank you for sending in the pictures, Gillian. They are very rare indeed. I searched the Google images library for Eugene Ivanof, Stephen Ward and Mandy Rice-Davies and it had nothing. I’m particularly surprised that there were no pictures of Mandy.
Are you able to get hold of any more of those involved in the ‘Scandal of the Century’?

Earlier today, I sent a photograph of Mandy Rice-Davies to Carl and his Mats. Amazingly, they have managed to upload it onto their pictures page.
This made me laugh. I was going to put it in my Diary thread but then I thought it would look better in the Pictures thread because it is a picture. I know it can only stay here for a few days.

I am delighted that Melissa has been made an Honorary Member of this Forum. She is a character in ‘Princess Ida’, the operetta in which my name is also featured. In Act Two she performs a duet with Lady Blanche.
Melissa: Now wouldn't you like to rule the roast
And guide this University?
Blanche: I must agree,
'Twould pleasant be,
(Sing hey, a Proper Pride!)
Melissa: And wouldn't you like to clear the coast,
Of malice and perversity?
Blanche: Without a doubt,
I'll bundle 'em out,
(Sing hey, when I preside!)

I have searched on the Internet but cannot find a copy of the music.
Tomorrow I will try and produce a scan from the printed score.
The piece is in F major and is in 3/4 time – three quarter time for you folks in the Colonies.

Are you a G&S afficianado, DW? Not many of us about these days.
Only saw Ida performed by the D'Oyly Carte once, new years eve 1977 when Jane Metcalfe was playing the part of Melissa.

Oh yes, indeed! I love Victorian and Edwardian operetta. Here is something from ‘The Arcadians’. It has great charm.
All down Piccadilly, dilly, dilly, dilly, Round by the Park, You'll see ladies running after little Willie, Till it gets dark.
And here is a picture of Jane Metcalfe as ‘Iolanthe’.

Thanks for posting that. What a pity she never recorded the role of Iolanthe. I only saw her a couple of times after the old DOC folded, then she seemed to vanish from the face of the Earth.
If I might ask further, do you collect ancient G&S recordings? I'm particularly anxious to obtain a copy of Henry Milledge's rendering of The Sentry's song.

Iolanthe
December 29 2003, 10:40 PM
The earliest recording of the 'Sentry’s Song' I can get my hands on is that made by Fisher Morgan with the D’Oyly Carte in the 1950’s.
I am unable to find any reference to Henry Milledge. Do you know when he was part of the Company?
Henry Millidge
December 30 2003, 4:20 PM
Henry Millidge was with the D'Oyly between 1921 & 1926 playing most of the secondary baritone roles, but also some of the leads such as Corcoran, Strephon, Sir Roderic etc. He made two 'official' recordings with the company - Sir Joseph in the act 2 finale only in the 1923 Pinafore, and 2nd Yeoman in the 1929 Yeomen of the Guard (after he had left the company).
His Sentry song, therefore, is an 'unofficial' recording, and flippin' hard to find in any shape or form. The well-known G&S scholar, Michael Walters, played me his copy some twenty five years ago, but it was stolen (along with many other scarce recordings) a few years later. I believe (but cannot be certain) that Millidge sings 'Ho, Jolly Jenkin' from Ivanhoe on the reverse side.
The 1929 recording of Iolanthe is now available on CD, and features the likes of Darrell Fancourt as Mountararat and Sydney Granville as Willis.
best wishes
