School strap payout halved
28mar03
A MAN who sparked outrage when he was awarded $2.5 million for strappings he received as a schoolboy yesterday had his payout halved.
A New South Wales Supreme Court jury awarded Paul Hogan $1.2 million in damages for the "excessive and unreasonable" punishment he received at St John's College, Lakemba, Sydney, in 1984.
The decision came after the trustees of the Catholic Church successfully appealed against a decision by a jury in February 2001 to award Mr Hogan $2.5 million.
Barrister for the church, Ian Harrison, SC, said later that his client may appeal against the revised award.
Mr Hogan, 32, claimed his right hand was permanently damaged when he was strapped eight times in 1984 by discipline master Denis Fricot.
