One of my male correspondents on the Friends Reunited General Chat Board has a not unhealthy interest in the chanteuse Kathy Kirby. I have told him that dear Kathy is a gay icon and that she likes being spanked.

Can our contributors who work in the entertainment industry, Sue Moron, Robin (not Peverett) and Miles on Brighton Pier, or indeed anyone else, confirm the spanking penchant? The story was told to me by a colleague with whom I am no longer in touch.

She really was beautiful. No wonder that women of Gillian’s persuasion wanted to, or perhaps still want to, get into her knickers.

Kathy Kirby’s extraordinary singing talent was discovered by Bert Ambrose. He had been the leader of one Britain’s best dance bands in the 1930’s and it later life, when the kids plugged into an electrical socket had taken over the popular music business, he wormed his way into ‘artiste management’. Svengali Bert had such an influence over Kathy that when he died in 1971 she became permanently tired and emotional and was never seen in public again.

The following was told to me by dear, dear Johnny.

Kathy’s first success on disc was ‘Dance On’. The first line of which is, ‘Don’t talk of love right now, dance on’. At a party in 1963, Bert got his violin out and said to Kathy, “Come on, doll, give us your hit number already. And I want that it should be the kinky version”. Kathy willingly obliged and sang, ‘Don’t talk of love right now, spank on’ with Bert using his fiddle bow to good effect.
