I grew up in County Cork in Ireland. In 1961 when I was 18 I found work in Dublin and moved to the capital. For a month or so I stayed with my sister who was a teacher in Dublin. She had been teaching for the previous five years. She and three other girls, who were also teachers, were renting a house together. I started my new job the same day schools were re-opening after summer holidays. One of the girls staying with my sister was a Margaret Farrell. She was teaching in a boys' primary school. The night before school re-opened, she packed some school supplies into a large box to bring to school the following day. She asked me if I could help her carry the box to the boot of her car. I noticed that there was a cane in the box. this cane was unlike canes that were sometimes used in the schools I attended in Cork. It was shorter and a litter stouter. It did not have a handle but at one end it was bound with black tape. I asked her about the cane and she said it was for "punishing naughty boys". Margaret Farrell was 25 years old at the time and very attractive. She is the only female teacher I know of who caned pupils. None of the women teachers in the schools I attended used canes. Since then I have been fascinated by the idea of attractive young women using canes.
Oh where are you now, Margaret Farrell? What memories you must have!

Yes, Simon. I often wonder where Margaret Farrell is now. She moved out of the house she was sharing with my sister a few months after I first met her and I have not seen her since. I often wonder what it would have been like to be one of her pupils and how often she used her cane.
