I live in USA. I schooled in Burma, Singapore and USA. I'm at college in USA.
In Burma, there's caning for both girls and boys. Caning is done on the palms or at the back of legs.
In Singapore, there's caning for boys in every school up to junior college. But for girls, i've seen one caned before. I have 3 female friends who were caned in school. 2 are from the same school and one from another school. So i'm sure that one school canes girls but dunno about another. In Singapore boys are caned on the buttocks or palms. Girls on palms.
In USA, there's no paddling in my school as it is a college.
I would like to know about school canings in countries outside USA and UK. Mostly Russia, Korea, Taiwan etc.

in general caning in India where I schooled is very much on the decline-in girls schools almost certainly (never much anyway)-mild CP is widely practised-a couple of strokes with a ruler etc. home cp is more variable and can be harsh-many of my freinds including females have been slippered regularly at home till about 13-14. there are of course newspaper reports of violent torture by school principals though very rare, I would think

I was wondering how anonymous can talk for all of India as its a big country with a lot of cultural variation. His (?) reference to the use of the slipper is interesting - surely something picked up from the English and maybe only a "custom" amongst a certain class. The shoe is thought of as dirty by many in India so this punishment may have an element of humiliation rather than pain?

Knowing something of the country and its neighbours I would also be surprised to hear that the slipper is used on girls' bare bottoms.

I wonder if anyone with African experience visits this forum? I know well that both boys and girls are caned and whipped in many African countries. It would be interesting to hear more of this.

Corporal punishment in schoools in Botswana is very much in place and particularly brutal at secondary level.

Although the Education Act states guidelines for the use of such punishment, it is not enforced and in most cases is abused.

For example, schoolchildren get beaten for coming late, for not backing their excercise books, for talking, failing tests, the list is endless...

Beatings take the form of a cane from a bush called moretwa, (the branches are flexible and 'ideal' for use as such) and are usually administered to the palms of the hands or buttocks. Male teachers beat female students (can be as old as 18+ in the secondary schools due to late school starting) and some obviously get sexual gratification for this.

It is unbelievable how they get away with it. The law states that only headteachers can beat, a punishment register must be kept etc etc but teachers do as they please. Often students are bleeding on the hands when beaten, sometimes with the rough edge of a ruler.

No matter how well behaved kids are they are going to be beaten and beaten hard at some stage. I reckon we have one of the most brutal corporal punishment regimes in the world in this country.

I just read the report from Bots. using the link carl and mats provided. It makes my blood boil to think of children being treated that way. If I ever see a teacher doing that to a little kid, god help the bastard. I can't imagine walking to school and getting a beating the minute I got there.Who knows what reason there might have been for being late.Nothing makes me angrier than someone abusing a child.And the fact that it's not a parent makes it worse.How could anyone continue to beat a child that is begging for forgiveness? I am writing this with a heavy heart what is going on in this country is terrible we are supposed to be a shining example of democracy in Africa and yet this brutal treatment is happening every single day across the country (well in the cities is not as bad because parents complain).

Parents add to the problem esp in rural areas because they seem to think is all part of the learning process. There is also a false belief that it is African tradition this is crap, is actually come from colonial days (as testified by other reports on this forum of education in Britain in the 1950s, 60s - Botswana gained independence in '66)

School uniform is like in most other African countries, dresses for girls and trouser and shirt for boys. For winter there is jerseys. Many kids have to wear the same uniform or that of their elder siblings for years as they can't afford new.

This is a confession in a way. In the 70s I was a teacher in a Kenyan girls' school. It was a sort of missionary institution. The classes were very big and the ability of the pupils was very mixed. Keeping order was not easy and if I failed to keep order the pupils became frustrated. In the end I started to use the cane. Many girls had told me to and yet I think all were shocked (including me) when I did because I turned out to be one of the most severe caners in the school.

I always did it after school. The girl would have to bend over with her hands on the classroom wall and I would cane her bottom.

I remember the first time. I don't know her age but she was quite a tall girl and seemed quite mature. Because schooling was such a rarity it wasn't unusual to find girls of twenty attending school.

I gave her a couple of fairly light strokes and then thought to myself "no - its got to hurt" so I gave her six more that were really hard. She had some trouble keeping in position but was always prompt in getting back to the position I wanted her in and seemed on the whole to be taking it well. So I continued. After another four I noticed she was sobbing so I stopped.

She had actually been quite a good pupil but she had been taking advantage of the general riot that my classes became and turned out to be my first victim. I felt a little bad about selecting her for this dubious privilege and resolved to target my punishments on the girls who really deserved it after that. After a good few canings I had much better control of my classes. A few times I gave as many as fifteen strokes but usually it was more likely to be five or ten (multiples of 5 seemed the norm in this school).

The cane I used was actually a heavy switch. I don't know the name of the tree it came from but it yielded a flexible rod with resilience and had the needed weight to penetrate past the girls skirts (which, of course, I didn't remove).

Most girls took their punishments fairly bravely and very obediently. They clearly know how to take a beating. I often caned them to tears, however.

Beating a girl just for making noise in a classroom you probably were too lazy a teacher to use other form of punishment such as detention. Just like teachers in Botswana, detention, manual work etc requires supervision so is easier just to physically abuse the student which is what you did. 10 or more lashes what a beast.

I attended catholic school (All teachers were nuns)since 1970 till 1978 (I was 10 - 18 years old). All pupils were girls. we were caned skirt up and panties at knees, bending over teacher desk, in front class, we usually got 3 - 10 depending on what we did. For extreme bad behaviour (caught smoking, skeeping classes or cheating test) punishment was given by superior mother in his office. If you were sent to her office, you knew you were going to get 15 - 30 lashes, only wearing bra and tied to gym horse. I was caned many times by teachers, but only once by superior mother. It was for smoking and I got 20.

Yes in 1996 in state schools and 1999 in private schools. Discipline and standards have gone down rapidly since.

Hi,I am from Malta. Although we never got the harsh punishments mentioned in this forum when I was at school ages ago, we only got one stroke or 2 at most on our hands with a heavy ruler,although it still hurt. Some teachers did it regularly and often while some others never did. But now we've gone to the other extreme. Since CP is illegal it is the students who are beating up the teachers. Literally! It is often in the news and quite common. In fact the teachers have gone out on strike quite a few times lately because of this problem. So it is no surprise to hear of the Teacher's Union ordering a national strike in this country because of this situation. I don't know if this situation exists in any other country.

Actually corporal punishment was abolished in Russia by Catherine the Great which was way before 1917. As for that account of Catholic girls being given 15 strokes in the classroom.

Asquith, I think that you will find that school corporal punishment in Russia was 'officially' abolished in 1863 during the reign of Czar Alexander II. In 1785 during the reign of Catherine II (Catherine the Great) members of the nobility and certain other priviliged groups were exempted from state imposed corporal punishment, but this does not seem to have affected its use on the offspring of those groups in schools!

I note that prizrak quotes 1917 as the date of abolition. This was of course the year that the Russian monarchy was overthrown and which in effect marked the start of the Soviet regime. Possibly the abolition of school cp was 'adopted' as a benefit of that regime in subsequent internal histories. Alternatively of course it may well have lingered on after 1863 and finally been swept away in the turmoil of the revolution.

Hi Asquith, if your 'pork pies' comment referred to susana's contribution back in May, 2006 then I am in full agreement with you. Not, I have to say, because of the number of strokes but because of the claimed degree of disrobing involved. My understanding is that in general Nuns were somewhat averse to the display of the unclothed female form, even to the extent of imposing rules designed to minimise this during pupil's ablutions.
