Pull Your Socks Up or Take Your Knickers Down

December 13 2003 at 1:22 PM
Amy Cox

I was talking to an older woman at work today, someone who was old
enough to be my grandmother. She was bemoaning the fact that kids at
school today seem to get away with far more than she did when she
was at school.

She told me that when she was about 13 she started to play up at
school and to do the minimum amount of work. In the end she was sent
to the Headmistress who discussed her behaviour with her and told
her that she had to work a lot harder.

Finally the Headmistress went to a cupboard and took out a
punishment cane which she flexed between her hands. She told the
woman that she had a choice. Either she pulled her socks up or took
her knickers down and asked her what it was to be. The woman told her
very quickly that she would try harder and was then sent back to
class.

After she had told me this I was wondering if I had been in the same
position what would I have decided to do?!

Amy,

You could never have been in that position - because you're a male!

Please get a life.

Hang on a minute, there are people using my identity! I quite like Lotta; she is intelligent, educated, witty, and is a great asset to this site.
I hope she does not think that the 'anonymous' posts are mine.

Not me I hope Gillian? I'm not silly. I had a very good education. I am a highly qualified engineer and member of the Institute.
I do have a sense of humour. You must be meaning the other 'anonymous' then.

Does it matter if a posting is factual or fiction,as long as it it is a good read ?
Many have criticised a certain heavy book written over 2,000 years ago but it's still a good read and has affected more people than there have been seconds in Lotta's life.
And Lotta is entitled to her opinions, bless her.

Good point

You have made a good point Anne. Certainly fiction provides a lot of entertainment but what is your opinion of fiction posing as fact?
I have not been looking at this site very long so I don't know what the rules are; there don't appear to be any. My impression is that it wants factual accounts. I may be wrong, so perhaps the Admins can clarify what is acceptable?
ANON.

ANON the Admins. rarely clarify anything on this site(except Gillian). If you post fiction posing as fact, then you can expect to be criticized if not an outright attack.

Fiction clearly labeled as fiction might be ok, but I can't speak for everyone.

Oh, come on. This is a compartively new expression and it has never been used to school kids. It has been used in films by a male executive to a female executive whose work is not as good as it should be, and it says, "Pull your socks up or I'll take your pants down."

As he put it in his poem "Administration"

Day by day your estimation clocks up
Who desrves a smile and who a frown,
And girls you have to tell to pull their socks up
Are those whose pants you'd most like to pull down.
