The author of what hetty did, LJ Carr I think? was not a spanking enthusiast but a writer who would have tried to make his book as realistic to the time as possible, so if he with no perverted agenda believes that it wasn't particularly strange for a girl of that age at that time to get a good hiding from her dad then why do you have a problem with it?

I have not read the book, but after the listening to a couple of episodes it is clear that the thing is meant to be somewhat tongue-in-cheek, with a running thread of subversive humour. The feminist Woman's Hour on the feminist BBC would hardly be likely to present the spanking of a female under any other circumstances.

The writer however did work as the Headmaster of a mixed primary school during the 50s and 60s so may well have had plenty of personal experience of the subject to draw upon.

What Hetty Did


Just to add that the novel is by J.L.Carr and was published in 1988 by the author's own Quince Tree Press. As he is dead the book may be out of print - but maybe this will revive interest. His novel of school life "The Harpole Report" set in the 1950's also contains a classroom spanking scene of a small boy, amusing rather than titillating. The whole book is also extremely funny and much better than "What Hetty Did" which rather peters out after a promising start, though the early spanking scene is the more titillating of the two.
