Corpun site updateJuly 16 2005 at 9:38 AM | Peter |
| - Colin Farrell's latest update on the Corpun site (July 15th)is an admirable collation of evidence of school CP in the UK, based mainly on Friends Reunited evidence and anecdotes.
Simple question - in the face of such evidence, including of course names of schools and personnel, how much longer can Sarah Jane / Lotta remain in denial ? |

There is a chance, a very small chance, that Colin Farrell is a visitor to this site. If he is, he may like to amend the information about William Penn School which is given in the ‘Great Whacking Schools’ table.
The school was originally a boys’ secondary modern situated in Adys Road, SE15 (not Choumert Road as those fools who run Friends Reunited would have it) but in1958 moved into a new building in Red Post Hill, North Dulwich, SE24 and became a comprehensive school for 1500 young gentlemen.

this otherwise interesting and commendable Forum is repeatedly disfigured by this sort of brain-dead venom. Is it not possible to pause and think before posting? Who at Friends Reunited is a fool? The originators are millionaires. They have thousands of admirers and emulators.

Certainly not fools in the sense thay they have made millions of pounds out of it.
But they can be very sloppy about detailed information that they could quite easily check, or rather they could, on that sort of money, very easily employ someone to check.
For instance there are no end of schools that have more than one page for what is essentially the same school with slightly different names, as a few minutes' research would show. This makes for a great deal of unnecessary confusion. |

I do not think it is the owners of the website who are sloppy in posting school names but the users. |

I think you haven't understood my point. I was talking about the way the site is structured, not about any of the contributions to it. There are a lot of instances where unnecessary confusion is caused by Friends Reunited having more than one page for what is actually, as can be deduced if one does rather a lot of extra research (which ought not to be necessary), the same school (e.g. where it has merely slightly changed its name). They have also created extra muddle by not understanding the difference between postal addresses and administrative addresses (Middlesex being a prime example of a postal address that hasn't actually existed as an administrative entity since 1965). That may appear to be an anorak point but it can mean that there are people who haven't managed to find most of their former schoolmates because they are looking under a different name and/or address. I admit the situation is inordinately complicated. I just think that with all their money, F.R. could afford to employ someone (and it would only take one well-informed person who knew how and where to do the research) to sort out the mess. |

Anybody can add a school to the list whether or not they have the details correct, whether of not the school is already properly on the list.
"Entered sites are listed live, but with the designation of 'tentative' until checked and cleared by Friends United staff." Obviously, the checking is necessarily rather cursory.

Why is the checking "necessarily" cursory? My point was that with all their millions they could afford to employ somebody to do non-cursory checking. |

I have no connection with Friends United. If I seem to be trying to defend them it is because I want to improve things.

Alaric, you have already correctly identified the problems users have with miss naming of schools, etc. Imagine the difficulties the official checker would have without personal knowledge of the schools or access to paper records from earlier decades. I think those who submit information have some responsibility for the accuracy of their posting. |

| Re: Corpun site update | May 5 2007, 4:12 PM |
The fact remains that there are a lot of errors on the Friends Reuinted website. For instance, I went to an all-boys school and anyone who genuinely lived in the city where I went to school would know this, but there are three entries for females!
This has been so for two years, so clearly no-one has edited the names, and yes, I have told them, but they've just ignored my missives - nuff said! |

| Re: Corpun site update | May 5 2007, 4:50 PM |
Same with mine!
Problem is, they were BOTH Maidstone Grammar School-women don't always look any further,I suspect.
You'd think they might suss the fact that all the names in their year being Robert,John,Wayne etc is a fairly significant pointer they are in the wrong place, but no!
Or they could just be desperate for a shag for old time's sake-I've yet to be approached by one such-minded female, but you never know.

| Re: Corpun site update | May 6 2007, 1:50 PM |
Fair comment, but the female equivalent of my school had a totally different name!
A few girls did come over (it was only 30 yards away) for advanced maths, Russian, and physics, but that doesn't count in my book. We, of course were not allowed to go over there under any circumstances! |
|
Steve M
| Re: Corpun site update | May 6 2007, 5:54 PM |
And no doubt the fact that you weren't allowed to go over there under any circs, naturally meant no-one ever did!!!!
Interestingly enough, there are a few bits in the Memories section of FR on the girl's Grammar, that allude to boys being spirited into heaven, sorry their VIth form common room, said boys being from our school.
The schools were actually about 2 miles apart,if not more, theirs in the leafy outer suburbs of Maidstone near the football ground, ours between two council estates, back-to-backs,a couple of leafy middle-class streets and Mote Park, on the road towards the Weald, just before it splits to Sutton & Loose respectively.
So mixed "activities" were unusual, to say the least-there were many rumours, but it isn't only Lotta who pours cold water on 2nd-hand news or facts. I did,too-the spirit of empirical research demanding I tried to get in to said common-room.
Where there's a will, there's a way-especially good if the object of your desire is actually in the IVth form, but can front using the VIth common room in the first place. What more could any gentleman do but attempt access in the circumstances?
