When I was a schoolboy and you were sent to the headmaster you knew you were going to receive the cane. I have read a number of posts on this message board and some do seem to be pure fantasy.
We don't really know whether girls were caned over their school knickers but I doubt it. I only know of one girl who was caned at my school and she had two strokes on each hand by the deputy headmistress.
My experiences with the cane were limited, I was caned on two occasions. My first visit resulted in four strokes over the seat of my grey school shorts while I was bent over and touching my toes, for being speaking back to my teacher. My second visit resulted in six strokes over my bottom because of my involvement in the great Boronia Park Public School fruit fight of 1978 while I was in the sixth grade. Twenty boys were caned over a two day period and we were put on a week of after school detention, I was not spanked when my parents signed the letter informing them of what I had been involved in and my punishment.
