Who was able to endure the rattan-cane without crying? Me not. I was caned by a female teacher. And I did sing (so her words) as all her culprits before and afterwards. In the boarding-school, I visited in the Sixties, the cries and pleas were heard from time to time through the whole house and I will never forget them. Let us change experiences.

Wolfgang, how old were you when caning caused you to "sing"?
At my secondary school (ages 13-17) boys did not cry - it was "unmanly" and you would get hell from classmates after if you showed too much response. Of course, the cane did tend to make the eyes water and occasionally a good stroke might invoke an incompletely supressed yelp.

I think at traditional boys' schools a sharp intake of breath was permittted, but nothing more than that.

How (indirectly) flattering. I believe my identity and that of Yee Ling have been merged to create the above. Even bad publicity...
Just wanted to add, that while I have little experience with the rattan cane, I do have an eye-watering one. I once was persuaded to have my eyebrows "threaded" an excruciating form of torture perpertrated by women on women (Indian one's in particular)in the name of personal grooming. I tried to be stoic and resolute and show no emotion etc. but my eyes watered all on their own. Definitely hurt more than any beating I ever got.

You, Saro, are not fantasiste. You are highly respected and valued member of this club. Keep posting. Yes please.

"Unmanly" and unnatural! The more I read about this type of school, the more I know how lucky I was not to have attended one. I suspect that if I had, by the end of the first month I would have either gone completely psychotic or have murdered some Master with a cane.
