Myth & Reality

A whole load of stuff posted on CP sites is clearly fantasy, whether stated as such or not.

So here is the truth about the schools I went to...... Is it dis-similar to others? I missed out on hard canings, bare bottom slipperings or any punishment in public. Should I blame my parents for this? Or were the options limited?

School 1 1971-74, age 5 to 8, State Infant School

One teacher smacked children on the bottom (in the 5 yr old class), so did Headmistress. One or two smacks on the clothed bottom. No other teachers used any Corporal Punishment that i remember. I was definitely smacked by the teacher a couple of times, though the memory is hazy. I was smacked once by the Headmistress (for tipping salt all over someones food). I don't remember a big drama - she simly told me off then smacked me.

School 2 1974 - 1978, age 8-12, Smaller mixed private school

No teachers used Corporal Punishment. Again the headmistress did. She had a wooden ruler, quite long and sturdy, which she used accross the bottom. Again clothed, but bending over a chair. Just one whack with it. In 4 years I received it 3 times, once for continual bad behaviour in class, once for sticking bubble gum on someone elses clothes, and once for being rude to a teacher from another school at an inter school sports match.

School 3 1978-1984, Boys School

Headmaster used the cane. I can only remember one boy being caned in the time I was there. I'm sure tere were others, but it was very rare. I didn't receive it, or the threat of it. By the time I left it had died out completely, a couple of years before the law was passed to outlaw it.

Other non-school stuff - my mother smacked me, and resorted to the slipper a couple of times.

That's it. So clearly I missed out big time.....

I’m leaving (see my resignation on ‘The disaster in the US’) but before I go, I just had to say what an excellent first post from Albert Hall that was.

Thank you.

I agree, very good Albert! I could tell a few tales myself but, having left school in 1950, times were so different then that I'm sure no one would believe me. What looks like fantasy now was fact in those days.

Good post Albert. However my reality was somewhat different than yours. I am glad that you were spared what many were not.
