"Walkout" currently showing on HBO has at least two accurate instances of school corporal punishment in the USA cir. 1968.  This is a new movie about the Latino student walkouts in California in '68. Directed by Edward James Olmos.

Will one of our kind American friends be recording the relevant bit and making it available somewhere?

If I were not so technically challenged, I would record it for you. It's not the recording, it's getting it from the vcr to the PC and then to a website that is beyond my skill level at this time.

The scene is about two Latino boys getting paddled for speaking Spanish in class. I guess it was against the rules.

It shows the boys having to bend over, and it shows the paddle being taken down from a peg on the wall. Then the sound of the swats, but not the impact.

I think it was accurate in every way and particularly underscores just how easy it was to go from sitting in your seat without a care in the world, to bending over for swats in less than 30 seconds. And that is exactly how it was back in the '60s. The second you let your guard down, there you were, bending over for swats. The rest of your day ruined. Unfair punishments like that tend to stay with you your entire life.

Would it be possible, Bob, for you to copy the butt-roastin’ bit to dvd and send it to us via e-mail. Big John could then bung it on to his videos site.

Alternatively, that prolific updater at corpun.com has an address at which he can receive post.

It is playing again tonight and again tomorrow evening. I'll record it on my VCR and see if I can load it into my PC. I've never tried it before. I don't have a DVR yet, otherwise it would be easy.  I know there is a way to do it, I just have to learn how.

Sorry but I can't do it. My computer won't detect my VCR. I have the movie on tape, and I have everything hooked up right, but my computer just won't detect the VCR. I know I've done everything right. I think my VCR is just too old.

I am an idiot.

I have been awake, in my living room, in front of the TV, twice when this movie played, and somehow I missed the paddling. Where is my head? I thought I watched the movie -- it was quite interesting I thought. I bet the paddling was in the first half. I tend to miss the first halfs of movies. Takes a bit to get my head out of the laptop.

And of course I don't normally get HBO -- that was during a promo. week. Durn!

You are not an idiot

It is in the first 15 minutes of the movie. The students are asked to read out load from a text book and one Latino boy helps another with a word by speaking spanish. The paddle hangs on the wall above a sign that says " If it's worth saying, it's worth saying in English".

The scene is over in less than 60 seconds. Both boys get 2 swats each. Both curse in spanish between swats.

The movie tries to be a documentary and a drama at the same time.

Here is a clip from the film. The quality is not the best but better than nothing, I suppose.
