Sort of. I got caned for not doing homework. I was warned the first time and caned on the second.

Another sort of, where, in year 4 of Grammar-1966/7-one kid got sent to the Head, getting 4 strokes, as a result of what was termed exactly the wrong attitude ie disruptive in classes, other behavourial misdemeanours.

The proverbial straw here was, however, his not doing homework and then handing it in late blatantly copied from another pupil in successive slots to the same master. Otherwise, the seat of his trousers might have stayed undusted.

The usual was repeat homework in detention, double dose for a 2nd offence. I know of few who got on to offence 2, but I believe offence 3 was off to the Head for the cane. At least 2 kids were expelled after offence 2, but, again, it was a combination of offences that gave them the equivalent of the red card.

One of these was then taken in by the local boys' tech-and became the only person in history to do the double;getting expelled from there within 2 terms for exploding another boy's desk with stolen magnesium!

I didn't get the cane for not handing in work on time but I know it happened.

When I was a young teenager I had to go into hospital for an operation and was on the general mens surgical ward. One of the men in there was a teacher and he used to tell the other guys in the ward including me about how he disciplined his classes. He said that he had all these rules about boys having to have their work done on time, exercise books open at start of class etc. etc. and that he was absolutely strict about this with each new class every year. Any boy who failed to follow the rules would be caned in front of the class. He was very proud of how well his system worked,

I was slippered several times for not handing work in on time. This was at a boys' grammar school (King's, Macclesfield) in the 1960s. It was standard practice between the ages of 11 and 16. It was done in front of the class, bending over touching toes - between 3 and 6 hard whacks on the seat of the trousers.
