David Mitchell and his "naughty step"

Cinemas across the land of Albion (U.K.)are screening a commercial advertisement in between showings of the horrific caning scene film.
The advert is for -I forget but something computer related.
The famous comedian David Mitchell and his partner Webb -the UK comedy
duo Mitchell and Webb are pictured standing on a bare stage in front of a curious looking set of flowery carpeted steps bearing a strong resemblence to an Eton flogging block.
After some chitter chatter Mitchell points to what he calls "the Naughty Step"and subtly beckons him to kneel/stand/or bend over "the naughty step",with his arse sticking out.
(His exact intentions are somewhat vague)
Webb looks surprised and responds "You must be joking",
to which Mitchell replies:
"The Naughty step is always very serious".
Hmmm.Is this supposed to be A)funny?B)Sell me a product on a sub concious level?
Firstly I cant even be sure of the Company that sponsored this.
Secondly making a laughing matter out of bizarre-antiquated-humiliating-
wierdo-methods of shaming and punishment is surely in bad taste?
I/we have never heard of a "naughty step".We have heard of a "naughty stick"
mainly for the first time in connection with the well newspaper publicised "Billy Jo"family case.
