Good point. And following up on that, those of you who are not from the north of England (most of you, I suspect), will not know the meaning of gradeley, referred to in the parental note to the school. Gradeley is a northern English dialect word meaning 'good', so in effect the letter is asking the teacher/headmaster to give them a good walloping.

I know gradeley from a lifetime of supporting Man U,despite beinf southern-born & bred.
I have to wonder, now you've raised the dialectic points, whether giving it to them gradeley might be done with a roll of black pudding? Most efficacious, as one of my cats might say!
And I love black pudding, by the way, though I'm now wondering if I couldn't have found an alternative use for it,too!

I don't understand Steve M's use of the word "despite". I think he might be indulging in a little irony (along with a prawn sandwich).

Speaking as one who tried to bring Roy Keane's approach to team management in the CSA, I can assure you the prawn sarnies are strictly for the cats in this household.

Actually, despite the title given to this thread, the website linked by the OP isn't about industrial schools. The schools mentioned were ordinary local schools in Liverpool.

Very observant of you Alaric.
Actually, the original item which I saw did refer to industrial schools, as is evident from the reference to them in the text. There was some information about them, but it was largely irrelevant to this forum, so I did not include the url.
