There are on the maps of Britain some very strange place names.
Do you blush with shame as your car drives past "Spankers Hill Wood"in Richmond Park?Yes its there in black and white on the O.S.sheet map bold as brass.
Did you see any Spankers at it?
(The Spanker bit probably refers to 18th Century Riding Aristocrats)
I have just discovered a "Red Hillock Bottom"off the M25 in Surrey!
mmmmmm surely THE place for a family pic nik?
I have yet to discover however a "Smacked Bum Grove"or a "Birched Arse
Avenue"though you never know!
Now that would be some match - Pers United V Bumernal!

Copied from the Derby Evening Telegraph thread:
"There really is a Birchover Way in Derby named after a Derbyshire village in the Peak District. However, like many of the streets in which correspondents supposedly live, it is a very long road and therefore less easy to check whether it is a genuine resident, given no number is published. There is no Howson in the phone book at that address.
PS As well as Birchover there is also a Spanker Lane in Derbyshire at Lower Heage, near Belper. It has a pub called until recently "The Spanker". The first time I went past there was a depiction on the Inn Sign of a mediaeval beating scene. This has been replaced over the years by pictures of a vintage racing car, a yacht and a whippet, and now its name has changed to something else which I forget. Perhaps they were plagued by fetishists!"

Fascinating! It beggars belief that such a place could really exist complete with wierd sign and all......must have been a few folks having trouble keeping a straight face as they entered to sup a pint in there and not a few young ladies blushing as they sipped their babysham!

The sign with the spanking showed a scene of a master beating a fully clothed (male) serf in pantaloons - not very thrilling. There was nothing in the pub interior of interest. The sign was removed over 20 years ago and the name change of the pub came about 10 years ago. Incidentally the village is Nether Heage not Lower Heage.

Funnyly enough its surprising there is not by now a monthly magazine with the title
"The Spanker"although it would make a good title wouldnt you say?
