This can't be true. They didn't even mention cycle shorts.

Even if approved, caning will NOT be given on the buttocks, only can be given on the palm or lower legs.

Winston, from your previous postings it seems you know a bit about school caning in Singapore having yourself been caned more than once in very recent times.
Do you think boys should be caned?
Do you think girls should be caned?
Should girls get the same punishment as boys for the same offences?
Should girls be caned on the buttocks?
Should boys be caned on the hands or lower legs instead of the buttocks?

O.k.,boys & girls should get the cane, only a last resort, caning shold be given on the buttocks with clothing on,in my view, caning is useful to control the students here.

I agree canings should given to errant girls on the butt like boys get it.They should change the law for adult canings also to include women. They want equal rights, well let women get a taste of the rattan cane on their bare ass while strapped to a whipping bench!!Id pay to see that !!

Boys versus girls

December 13 2007, 12:14 AM

Traditionally, boys were very much more likely to receive corporal punishment at school than girls - in British Empire / Commonwealth countries at least. Boys behaved worse and tended to commit those offences considered corporally punishable. Girls were considered frail and unsuited for the more robust forms of CP especially once puberty was reached.

The move towards gender equality did not lead to girls being treated the same as boys but more the reverse. The move to abolish CP came far more from females than males and with little support from boys actually subject to CP.

Subjecting females to CP may lead to its abolition which could be bad news.

Caning does happen for girls in Malaysia. I've personally gotten it in the palms in primary school. Mind you my school is a Chinese-medium primary school where caning is a norm.

You can read about this in the news at http://thestar.com.my/columnists/story.asp?file=/2007/12/4/columnists/vkchin/19629191&sec=vkchin

In my primary school, all teacher carries the cane around in school and canes students in front of the classes. I personally think the canings aren't that hard, just that as I was a small girl then, the caning hurts. Caning almost always happen at the palm, though I've seen one or two times when my friends (girls) get caned on the buttocks in front of the class too, cant really remember why though.

Caning on the legs sound cruel, can't imagine that. Though I heard from my friends in other schools (secondary school) that caning for girls in baju kurung is in the hands while for girls in pinafore is on the legs, so that caning's done on exposed areas of the skin.

Bob T: What is this caning got to do with cycle shorts?

I'm 22 this year. I think even if it is approved, whether the rules will be followed is another matter. Anyway, I think recent incidents have shown that when teachers can't cane, they seem to have no other constructive outlet but to resort to crazy punishments like forcing students to squad and soak in a school pond. If that's the case I think canings similar to the ones that I had experienced or witnessed in school are a much acceptable punishment.

I've just had a quick look at that and posted my views there. Now I understand what Bob T was talking about.
