Pupil sex claim against priest Feb 1 2008
Lucy Proctor
AN EALING Abbey priest is under investigation over claims he sexually assaulted a St Benedict's School pupil.
Police swooped on the abbey in Charlbury Grove on Friday last week and took the 66-year-old man to a West London police station for questioning before releasing him later the same day.
The allegations, thought to have been made by a sixth form pupil at neighbouring St Benedict's School in Eaton Rise, were made on January 15 and relate to a string of alleged offences dating back to 2006, believed to include charges of sexual 'grooming'.
Abbot Martin Shipperlee became aware of the claims two weeks ago but rushed back to Ealing on Wednesday night from a conference to meet with shocked staff.
He said: "The allegations are of a serious and unpleasant nature. I am horrified.
"We have been through a very bad time with accusations like this.
"Certainly mistakes are made and I can't hand-on-heart say mistakes are not made but we take these things incredibly seriously."
He said the priest in question was not currently at the abbey or working with children and that social services were investigating.
The allegations do not relate to any activities connected with St Benedict's.
The child abuse scandal is the latest to hit the abbey after a former pupil alleged he was abused during the 1990s and won thousands in damages from Father David Pearce and the abbey in 2006 - allegations that prompted other former pupils to come forward and speak to the Gazette about bullying and abuse by priests while they were at St Benedict's.
Last year Father Stanislaus Hobbs was cleared of indecently assaulting a teenager in 1985 and 1986 when he was a teacher at the school, a case that saw Ealing's Catholic community rally around the 77-year-old who insisted on his innocence throughout the 14-month ordeal.
Police are now investigating the latest claims before the man appears again at a West London police station in May 2008.

That school is famous for miles around.
they recently bigged it up with brand spanking new buildings etc.
but the 4 by 4 school run parents are dossers
they turn up at 3pm and sleep in their cars till 4
they park in drives
and block all the roads.
its an all boys school
i know someone who passed by there
they saw some funny sights
one day they saw this enormous gargantuan sixth form boy in school uniform must have been about 6'2"sitting outside the school on a electricity box in the street,
on his LAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!he had seated a much smaller boy many years his junior.!!!!
The whole sight looked like a ventriliquists dummy!!
It was totally bizarre!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Naturally we suspected the worst(pedo) but as they dispersed some minutes after didnt think any more of this bizarre incident....or could do much...
the house up the hill was reputed to be one of the haunted ones but has now been knocked down.

If your English Literature homework contained spelling of "serious"as in your header (and it was not just a sloppy typo like mine)ie you do not know how to actually spell serious then I am not surprised that you have been on the receiving end of the "Eton Birch"as you quaintly put it!
How old are you?
The Birch at Eton was abolished about 150 years ago!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Clearly the message I received from bozo is rather sad, especially as he criticises my sopelling. I do hold a Master Degree in Education. Clearly, when writing in forums we sometimes rush, or perhaps become a little lazy.
WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO POINT OUT TO THIS GENTLEMAN IS BEFORE MAKING STATEMENTS HE SHOULD CHECK HIS FACTS.
I AM REFERRING TO HIS STATEMENT THAT BIRCHING WAS NOT AEDMINISTERED FOR 150 YEARS. IN FACT I SUGGEST YOU GO BACK TO SCHOOL YOUNGMAN, MAKE SURE OF YOUR FACTS. The last birching at eton was in the 1970s to check in future before you open your mouth. As my good latin master would say engage your brain before you talk. Adam
