lack of disciplineMarch 5 2008 at 9:58 AM | monty |
| Once again my morning TV viewing was alive with reports of school children 'out of control' or just plain old ignorant!
The young teacher who had decided to give up the teaching profession was describing how she had ben subjected to being sworn at, spit at and many other general signs of uncouth behavior. The only attempts to put an end to this behaviour involved, sending the child to a 'cooler' a bit like letting them get out of lessons, another method suggested was a period of exclusion. Once again giving exactly what the child was wanting. No other corrective measures were available.
Any suggestions??? |

Young women just dont understand the meaning of the word"Discipline"today Monty.
Actually the media try to wind up the public with this issue.
The general public feel strongly that kids ought not to be able to cheek
their elders to varying degrees,it gets their back up.
However as we have seen the media phone ins on this topic usually fail and are rather pathetic.
Actually look behind the young person whos rebelliously cheeky youll find theyve probably been dealt a bad hand one way or another.
Summerhill was a school that rejected CP and took difficult youngsters it was ahead of its time in the 1930s.
Either have severe CP or none.

If I recall Summerhill did not have formal lessons?.
There was a debate a few weeks ago on the Beeb, full of liberal females saying ad nauseum that " smacking" taught violence. Reasonable chastisement after warnings does not entail violent behaviour, someothing that these idiots can not grasp.
Truth is that the tail wags the dog. |

Actually Summerhill was quite "advanced"for its time in the 1930s
It disdained the flog 'em and bash 'em theory that abounded in most schools of its time.
However it did have some unsavoury aspects like allowing the kids to pretty much express negative feelings or not attend lessons etc iof they so chose.
The hope was to make school a carrot instead of a stick.
One cannot say that it was enormously successful.
From my observations the kids of parents who are in trouble-its many times the parents attitude TO the kids that is the problem.
This attitude from what Ive seen in public is usually
"Im the boss.you do what I say.you are my slave property."
Talking down to kids obnoxiously like this always ends up in the kids resenting the parent and leads to fights and "get back"misbehaviour that drives the parents nuts until he kids get to 16 and scram.
"Shut up.You are stupid.Do this do that"
Its all really a question of HOW instructions are put.
Sadly working class parents often lack the psychological finesse or dont care for it.
Brutalising the kids.
If any adult approaches such parents they usually get told to "Shut their mouth",
"Dirty Old Man" or "Do you want a slap"?
This inability to distuinguish between a kid in the playground and a 60 year old adult is a carteristic of these families.
You get 4'.00 kids trying to "beat up"6'adult males.!
True kids will misbehave I guess and "test the limits"from time to time.
But these fights ought to be carried on in the home not half way down the High Street at full volume.!
