Spanking in Canadian school (early 1970's)

I am writing in response to the rebuke I received from FALLING STAR.I wrote a while back in the form of a comment to the Posting "girls and headmasters." I do agree it was not the proper place to explain my feelings on the subject as I am not a girl and have never had a headmaster. I apologize for my misplaced comment. That being said I would like to clarify something with all you readers. I have read many of the comments etc. on this site and just cant believe some of the things I have read.It however is not my place to judge another's writings as true or false,I will leave that opinion to myself. In response to Falling Star, you are correct, Cameron is not my real name and for the sake of privacy I would like to leave it that way. I would like to clarify a few things with you though regarding the facts of my .."story." What I wrote was and is fact. I do have many witnesses and from time to time over all these years it was brought up. Not so much now anymore as these people have moved on with their lives and now have children and grandchildren. But for me it has never gone away. Falling Star also wrote that this kind of thing never happened in schools in Canada.Falling Star wrote that Canada is ...civilized and docile. Well I went to school in a small community in Nova Scotia Canada and I can tell you these things did happen. No ,I wasn't the only one punished in this way. My best friend was spanked bare bottom but in the privacy of closed room. I was in that room as that woman took his clothes down and spanked him over her lap. The door to this room had a vertical/rectangular window and I recall one boy running around outside in the hall telling everyone what was going on.I have no idea what he saw.I only know what I saw. I saw her turn this 7-8 year olds bottom red. In regards to my own experience, I feel I was bullied and treated unfairly by her, perhaps singled out.As far as I know I was the only one ever spanked in front of the whole class. This does not mean that she didnt do it to others before I came along or after I left, again,I cant speak of what I don't know. What really boils me is when someone tells me I'm a troll and "made it all up!" Falling Star also pointed out a spelling error.I misspelled the word "public",...I am truly sorry about that. As I wrote before I was shamed by being sent to the corner. Then when that didnt seem to be enough she took me front and center and spanked my across her lap on my pants. This happened maybe 5 times until one day she did it with my pants down and shirt pushed up. She spanked me with her hand probably 25 or more times hard. It was more than I could endure as an 8 year old. Both physically and emotionally. I have no idea if anyone in Canada has ever tried to bring legal action against anyone. I would like to see someone held accountable. Thanks for letting write this,...thank you for listening. What I would really like is to hear of anyone else from Canada who shares a similar experience. Yes I was spanked in front of a full mixed class of 7-8 year olds with my pants down in 1973. In Canada! A short time after that I was spanked in the teachers lounge with a teacher witness. It was with my pants down and she used the strap. That happened because I was pretending to be "the six million dollar man" in the school yard. What a crime.

Spanking in Canadian school (early 1970s)

I do not know anything about Canadian schools around that time but at my all girls primary school in the UK it was very common to be put over the female teacher's lap or bent over a desk for a soundly spanked bottom or upper thighs.

However even though the teacher usually lifted up the back of the dress she did not lower the knickers. I think this was not allowed. I doubt if there would be one girl who attended school in the UK during the 1970s that did not get at least one very sound spanking from a female teacher in primary school.

I agree with Miss UK 1979. Our grade 6 teacher Miss Smith did not miss any opportunity to administer a very sound spanking to any girl that needed one. I probably spent more time bending over the front desk or across her lap than at my own desk. Never the less I will admit that I was quite a brat in those days and needed to be soundly spanked on a regular basis. It helped settle me down and I was able to do very well at school.

There were no hard feelings and after I moved up into secondary school I still used to see her around and we joked about how naughty I was. Being spanked in primary school was no big deal. It happened to just about every girl.

In primary school during swimming classes myself and two other girls were flicking each others bottoms with wet towels. The gym mistress came up to us and told us to stop, which we did for a while and then continued when she went away. A prefect reported us and the gym mistress took us all into the changing rooms and put each of us over her lap (one at a time of course) for a really sound spanking.

I believe cp was abolished in Canada in 1990. Can anybody confirm this?

School Corporal Punishment came to an end in 2004 just Google Corpun 12678. Albertas reaction followed in 12652.

When I was going to school in the seventies the paddle was being used less and less and from what I can understand the strap was quite common and was even being sold in the Moyers School Catalogue for $1.50 right up until 1971 as seen in the first two links. Scenes from the 1972 Richmond High School New Brunswick reunion follow. The signing of the paddle (previously shown) was rarer but not unheard of; it sure beats the pages of a punishment book. A brutal paddle (a swat stick) was quite frequently employed right up until the time of the Canadian abolishment.

The last hold out was this boys boarding school

He says he "liberated" it from the discipline master's office, and that in 2002 there were paddlings at the school practically every day. This fact, if true, is all the more remarkable because it was a very small school - there were only a couple of hundred boys on the roll. Certainly the school had a very disciplined regime with a strong CP tradition -- sensibly involving US-style paddling of posteriors rather than the more usual, but in my view silly and dangerous, Canadian (Scottish) practice of strapping the hands -- and I have been able to verify independently that my correspondent was indeed a student there

Colin is spot on about US-style paddling of posteriors or doing it the American Way.

Cameron:

I have only just read your reply. You posted under another heading which I did not read until now, and as I am only an occasional visitor to this forum, partly because I work away from the UK (where I am based) on a regular basis, and do not always have internet access. As a slight aside, we are constantly told that we live in a global village, but try getting a reliable internet connection in central Kazakhstan or Azerbaijan!
Your posting above makes far more sense than your original one. I see that someone else who appears to have suffered similarly has asked you to contact them, and I would recommend you do, for the reasons given below.
There is no doubt that if what you say is true, then this is abuse, and in the present climate would probaby be viewed as such by [your] legal counsel, particularly if there are witnesses, or cases of others who were similarly treated.
I have recently been in correspondence with a lady who went to school in Tanganika, and who amongst others, suffered from excessive corporal punishment in what was, in effect, a private school. You may have seen a recent posting by me regarding the jocari bat, which was prompted by my exchange with her. She told me that the jocari bat was used near to the end of term because it left less marks than the other forms of punishment which were inflicted upon them.

quote: "At my school the men who beat the pupils switched to jocari bats [from, steel rulers, canes etc.,]towards half term & end of term so to avoid any evidence of heavy handedness from bruising. We called it getting the "cuts" & were left black & blue & often with broken skin, scabs, etc on our bums.." unquote.

She, and a number of other ex-pupils, have now banded together and initially wrote to the schools' governing body.(The school still exists). Their letters have been ignored, and they have now retained the services of a lawyer to whom they have given evidence, and who has taken up the case on their behalf.
You are entitled to consider my response to your original posting somewhat unsympathetic, but as I have mentioned before, this forum suffers from more than its fair share of trolls, so-called fun posters, and items which are completely off-topic. This is the principal reason why I post infrequently, although I do a lot of my own research. I trust that you will now see that with the benefit of a clearer posting, I am able to offer you the experience of someone who lived in a totally different part of the world (which at the time was part of the British Empire), yet allegedly appears to have suffered abuse similar to which you describe, and that they are now seeking redress.
I don't believe I mentioned the word 'docile' in my reply to you, but my point remains the same - Canada is a civilised country, and that sort of thing should not have happened.

Where is Richard ?

Richard, where are you? I am interested in reading of your (TRUE)accounts of corporal punishment you suffered in school in Canada. I only know of one other person who had this happen to them in school in Canada, the way that I had it happen to me I mean. I witnessed my best friend spanked in this way also, but in private.Lucky him! He died a number of years ago and when we were young and I brought it up he would get this really embarrassed look on his face and vehemently deny that she pulled down his pants when she did it to him. I was the only other person in that room and I know what I saw. I witnessed the whole event from start to finish and yet he still refused to admit it to me to my face. I WAS THERE. I do believe they call that denial. Just how humiliated was he as a child when he had this happen to him, that he refused to even admit it to me 15 years later. Well when it happened to me it was done in front of our whole class so I know how humiliated he felt.At least he got his in private. The other accounts that I have gathered are of school chums getting "the strap" on their hands in the office. This all took place in 73. I have an account from my sister that she and two friends were spanked with their dresses up and panties down in the office with a strap. She said it was a sever beating and done in front of each other, all three of them got it. Because a boy looked under their dress they got beat. That would be some where around 1967.I have one account of a woman that used to get the strap back then too She still had scars on her legs from where the strap would hit he hand and continue downward and lash her legs.Thats how hard her hands were whipped. This was in Nova scotia Canada.
