Hi
Declan. Yes, the imposition of Syariah law seems to be proceeding apace. I think that is 5 men and 3 women sentenced to be caned so far, of whom only one woman, well documented in other threads here, has not appealed and is therefore potentially likely to be caned in the forseeable future.
In my heart of hearts I know that what Malaysian Muslims do is a matter for Malaysian Muslims. However there are implications of this trend, and what it seems to say about Syariah or Sharia law, which reverberate far beyond Malaysia. You only have to read the comments following the newspaper article you link above to to see the potential effect on British Muslims, who would like to be able to have their own version of Sharia law for certain aspects of their communal affairs. As it happens I don't support that wish, but it is clearly unfair and unfortunate that their case should be damaged by a once liberal and democratic Nation implementing Sharia law in a way which attracts worldwide attention.
On a lighter note, also regarding the comments following the article linked above, I can empathise with the person who said:
They were trying to have sex in a car.
If the car was a 1962 Austin A 40, try would be the word.
Though I never attempted the activity stated in an Austin A40 I did spend many turbulent and uncomfortable hours jammed in the back seat of one of that vintage navigating on rallies, an experience not improved by the fact that the power output from the completely non-standard engine was about 4 times what Austin intended, but the suspension (what suspension?) and brakes (what brakes?) were standard. Still, I did have the consolation that I was slightly further from the ever impending collisions with trees, walls, field gates etc. than the lunatic driver!
You say:
Plus, for the benefit of A_L the city centre yesterday was awash with girls from NGHS. I think they were attending a food festival. Most wore the short pleated skirts but some were in tight conventional minis in light blue.
Have a care, please! You'll be getting me a bad reputation!

In fact I don't think I've seen other than the occasional NGHS girl since I left school. When I was at school the NGHS girls, and indeed those from Brincliffe, just over the wall, were by and large a fairly studious lot not given to pushing uniform regulations. Now the Manning Grammar School girls from across the forest, they were quite another matter! Brincliffe is I think long gone now, and Manning is an 11-16 girls comprehensive in Aspley apparently.
As for the city centre, I can quite literally count the times I've been on Slab Square in the last 10 years on the fingers of one hand. The last time was a few days before the end of the last visit of the Nottingham Eye. I gave someone a lift to an appointment in Broadmarsh and wandered up to the square and had a ride on the Eye on impulse while I waited, greatly regretting that I hadn't got a camera with me.
