Well, on Saturday afternoon my coil pack on my A4 1.8T (cylinder 1) packed up, lucky , for me I was close to my audi dealer, and a audi tech stopped and helped me, it was close (2km) so we decided to drive it to audi dealership, about a 1km to go the car stop, found out that 3rd /4th cylinder had packed up as well, well the tech went to Audi and got 4 coil packs to replace them all, and found of the 4, one was faulty, So he replaced the 3 and the car was fine, but I thought that if 2 or more fail Audi freeway plan wound replace all.

Now heres my gripe, went to the same dealership today, to get the fourth one replaced, waited patiently for an hour, while they sorted out the job card and AFP approvally etc, then I am told to start the car, and senior service guy tells me that its not missing and Audi freeway plan won't pay for it, my problem is that I did spend over R220 000 to now worry that one night I will be standing on the side of the road because the 2 pack would have packed up. Even worse would be if it happens while me wife is driving. I find this unacceptable seeing that is is a well known fact that coil pack are faulty from the factory.

Even the dealership is telling me that AFP will be claiming against the factory for the part, I am really pissed off now, not at my dealership but AFP

Does anyone know the email address for Audi South Africa, will like to give them a piece of my mind.

What are you guys thoughts on this.

regards

It is common knowledge that the coils on the 2003 cars were problematic and I have personaly had 2 blow on me....after the second one audi replaced all 4 with the new improved version.
That is what Audi Freeway is for and don't let your dealer tell you any different is more than one is faulty they change all 4 that is it.
The Audi guys in the States were even recieving money back from Audi claimed from the same problem (some up to $800 for the inconvinience caused) so don't take the bulls#it there is enough evidance on the Net to support your case if they packup in a dodgy area far from a dealer you can surely claim rental / accomodation and other loss of activity associated to that that is what they pay premiums for public liability.
I am lucky to only be dealing with Audi Sandton and even if it had happend 100km away I would have still driven the car to them for assistance they have a No Nonsence Approach.
Good luck

Sound like we must stay away from your Service Dealer
Phone Audi SA (011-203-2781) and ask them for e-mail address for the correct department (Public Relations / Customer Relations or Complaints)

Wild 1.8T,

As you know I had the same problem this weekend. Anyway I got my car sorted out yesterday at Audi Centre. After reading your story I phoned Alpine Audi (this is where I always send my car to) and they told me that if one goes then the policy is just to replace that one, but if it happens again all four must be replaced even the one that was changed. They told they cannot do it as the dealer who did initially must sort it out. I then phoned Audi Centre and spoke to the service manager and he said only the faulty one was replaced. I then mentioned to him that this was the second time I had coil pack failure. He said in that case all must be replaced and I have made arrangements to sort out tomorrow. As can be seen the two dealers know about this and they have said to me that this is what Audi have asked them to do. So you are right to expect them all to be changed. Anyway thanks for your post at least I will get my car sorted as well. You learn something new everyday!

Had the same problem with my TT, ERM audi only replaced 2 coil packs and two weeks later the car had to go in because another coil pack failed then they replaced the other two. I asked them why if they know that they have a problem don't the replace all four when it first happens, they told me FWP wont give them the go ahead to do all four that is why they do 2 at a time. As mentioned for the amount we pay for our cars one would expect a little more from FWP and Audi

Hi, have been watching this issue for a while and I have a silly question, what are coil packs, I have the A4 B6 1.8T 2003 model, so I'd like to know what coil packs do and how will I know if they fail on my car. It is due for a service in another 5k km, so should I tell them to inspect them?

Thanks for the education guys

Cheers,

Vlad

Coil packs, are individaul coils per spark plug, they give the spark plug it's electicity to spark , therefore combustion etc.. so when one goes the car misses/ misfires, teh probel is that if you drive with one gone you car only is running on 3 cylinders, and it can cause damage to your cat, and ring and increased wear on your engine, well that what I have read on the net.

regarding my issue, well I know the fourth will go soon so just waiting for it to happen and then Audi will see the wrath of me , I am not wasting me time going to explain to a senior tech why they should change all , or by the way the Senior tech / manager told me they don't believe in preventitive maintenance , I give him an eg of wheel bearings telling if one side goes(front), will he recommend that both side get changed or not, he said you must only fix what is broken, I almost fell on the floor laughing, so guys why should we worry about servcing our cars just run it till it breaks, Make me think some time that I know more about my car then the so called "agents" , bunch of idiots ( not all just a few that give the brand a very bad name)

Same happened with me.....1 went, and I asked that they replaced all 4 as I was going on a long trip the following weekend but they couldn't do it because it was not FWP's policy! 2 days after I got back from my long trip another one went so they replaced all!

I even told the service advisor that after the 1st one goes the chance of another one going within a week or 2 is 99%.....he laughed and said that they almost never get "come backs"......so when the second one went I gladly gave him the "I told you so..." line

SIMPLE SOLUTION

Incompetent dealers / service advisors are to blame but if I had the same issue I would have asked them to replace the remaining 1 or 2 even if it means paying for it mayself( R180 per coil I think and it takes 10 min.no longer) and than when it happens again (which you are certain off) claim the amount back from them. Surely the R400-500 is not an issue to you fellow luxary German sedan owners
That way you have peace of mind during your holiday....just my 21 cents on the issue

Actually asked how much they were and was told around R800/R900 rand each, so considering I spent the money on the car which had a full motorplan , I don't see why I should outlay my money , but when it packs up even if I am 1km from the dealer , I will call audi assist and let them pay for towing etc.. It's more the principle rather then an issue of money.

Actualy I am wrong the new improved coil is R318.00 ea. but than again if I suspected one or two are about to go and I am heading to CapeTown I will personaly not hasitate to spend the money and 1/2 hour labour (one can fit themselfs) as to rely on Audi Assist in the middle of the Karoo is not that much of an option for me but than that is me.....

My car is presently at Audi Umhlanga regarding the engine miss. I've told the service advisor that it could be the coil packs - if it is then i hope they change all of them which i doubt they'll do. R318 is quite cheap for coil packs and Audi should replace them all because tons of guys seem pissed with this issue!!! My perception of Audi being part of a group of cars associated with reliability is beginning to deminish! At the moment i'm sitting in my office contemplating future problems. They don't even have courtesy cars, which i think is kak!!!
