Wow maybe it is time to sell for me .
And I was told by the Audi guys that only software issues were found on the Multritronic no known technical (hardware) failiures.
After checking the replacement cost (of apperantly R50k) I can't let my freeway expire or have to sell before that.
Damn

Hi guys
I've got an A4 1.8T Multitronic which seems to be going okay, apart from it seeming to start off in "2nd" gear on occasion. If you then give it a prod (not using the kickdown switch), it almost seems to change down a gear and get going. Strange thing is, it even does this in "manual" mode with 1st selected. Any of you noticed this before? The only thing I can think of is that it's starting off in a "winter" type mode to prevent wheelspin, although that's a bit odd given that ESP is fitted. Any ideas?
Software mods have been mentioned, any ideas whether they also apply to the A4, and whether they are automatically applied as part of a normal service, or do you have to beg for updates....?

I think you have to ask for your software to be reloaded otherwise it doesn't get done......they might if the pick up a problem while test driving it but otherwise you must request one. Check with your service agent

On rare occassions it also jerks when engaging drive after reverse. This has not, however, occurred regularly enough (maybe once every four months) to warrant taking the car in (I'd never be able to replicate the problem).
One thing I've learnt about the multitron box: make sure the car is 100% stationary before switching between drive and reverse or vice versa. The transmission only unlocks when your foot is on the brake pedal, however, it is easy enough to change (whilst depressing the brake gently) before the car is 100% stationary. This really confuses the box, often causing it to jerk, etc.
I have also noticed that clutch control on coming to a stand-still is not always consistently smooth, particularly on an incline.
I would be extremely interested to know what new software is available for the box and how one persuades Audi to load it if one does not have a specific complaint.

Not sure what is different with the latest software, but your dealer should just load it if you ask him to. Had mine done at Audi Centre Sandton with a regular service, but did specifically ask them to do it.

Did they give any indication of what the software was meant to improve? I'm also interested to know what exactly gets replaced when the software is updated. As far as I know (I stand to be corrected), there's 1 ECU which controls the engine, gearbox etc. etc. - so if they update the 'box software, do they also overwrite code for the engine? Does this mean that if you've got something like REVO installed, it is affected? And vice versa, would REVO code, for example, overwrite new code for the box? I know that some of the code is encrypted, so maybe this isn't the case, and perhaps the code for the box is stored in a different memory region on the ECU...
Any takers on this one?
