Hello. I recently purchased a polar silver Audi RS2 Avant with 142'500 km on the clock and one previous owner. The car was serviced regularly at Audi Centre CT but still needed some minor work, so it is with Geoff Mortimer at the moment and I should get it back on Monday.

One of the concerns I have is that of the catalytic converters and lambda probe. I'm having the cats cut out (they were damaged), but am wondering if it is worth replacing the lambda probe? I'm concerned that fuel economy and performance will be sub-optimal if the old lamda probe was damaged (by leaded fuel). Will this make a big difference? Do I need to get one specific to the RS2 or is this just a Bosch part?

Out of interest, does anyone know how many of these there are in SA? According to the UK Quattro Owner's Club, 173 UK-spec RHD models were allocated to Audi UK and I've seen various posts on the web quoting total RHD production of 200 and total production of 2'200. If the figures are correct, only 27 RHD's went outside of the UK which would mean a lot fewer in SA than I originally thought. I know of at least five, but I originally estimated 20-30 which, if the aforementioned figures are correct, would be extremely unlikely. I'm logged a query with Audi SA customer care to see if they can get some numbers so will post if they are prepared to disclose the info.

Hi Greg

I spoke to Geoff earlier this week and heard he had a RS2 there! Firstly, congrats with the car - it is a true classic.

On the cats - I am sure that the car will go much better without them - I have been trying to convince Gerrit that 10 year old cats a) don't work anymore and b) kills performance!

Lambda sensors needs to be replaced every 60,000 km's in any case. One can test if yours is still ok, but more than likely not. I bought a generic Bosch sensor from www.lambdasensor.co.uk for GBP45 but this needs to be soldered into the electrical connectors. The Bosch part with the right connectors costs GBP65 from them. Locally buy from Diesel Electric (Bosch Agents) rather than Audi - they will be much cheaper but I expect it would be cheaper to import!

From what I heard there were 15 imported to SA. I have seen 5 of them and one's engine lives in my S2.

Hi Gandalf

Thanks for the info. I've got to get a replacement indicator lense from VAGparts anyway, so I'll compare their pricing on the Lambda probe to Diesel Electric's.

Re Gerrit's car, I test drove it as it came onto the AutoTrader, a week (possibly less) before Gerrit bought it. The previous owner specifically mentioned to me that he had the cats replaced under the motorplan (a 120'000km motorplan that was purchased with the vehicle from new), so they are relatively new cats and have been fed unleaded fuel only.

Mine, unfortunately, were in an awful state. Just tapping gently on the one you could hear the rattling of loose innards. The only question was whether to replace or remove and at R30'000 for a new pair, I figured I'd remove for now and make a decision on whether to install a new pair at a later stage.

Congrats on the car.

I have replaced the CATs with 2 small boxes, without them there is horrible NHV (noise harshness and vibration).

I only use leaded fuel. When the lambda in dirty or old consumption is about 17l/100km when its clean or new 15l/100km for town driving and the same for a bit of hooligan driving as well.

I also need an indicator lens.

Cheers
Shane

Thanks Shane & Craig

Shane - congrats on yours. I gather you bought the RS Blue one that was at Jurie Swart a while back?

Geoff has just finished with my car so about to go and collect it. From what I understand, he has hollowed the cats rather than replacing them with a straight through pipe. I guess I'll find out in the next hour.

Shane - let me know if you want me to do a simultaneous parts order from VAGparts. I have not investigated if the shipping costs will be preferrable, but if so it may make sense!

Hi Greg

Had a look at your car today and its in such a lovely condition. Congrats again.
The Car sounds just fine with the "GMMS" cats.

My indicator is on it way with Andre's MAF.
