last night, whilst giving the car some heavy stick, the speedo needle just dropped and died...the same thing happened some months ago when i really put foot but it started working when it wanted to and then came right by itself...i'm hoping it comes right again but need to seriously have it checked out as it also appears to play havoc with the fuel gauge but nothing else (rev counter etc all fine?)....is this the start of something simple to repair or is it a "big" problem, maybe a loose connection ?? just not sure why it works sporadically ?

Could be loose connection , Is your car an A4 ? if so it might be the switch that fits on the gear box that come loose.

Could also be the fuse that runs the speedo - As far as i remeber the speedo, reverse lights, roll locks and air bags are off the same fuse i think . Check fuse or fuse holder - should be fuse for reverse lights

Had the same problem on my A4. Turned out the plug connection that goes into the gearbox was a bit moist. It happened after an engine wash at an Audi branch. Few quick sprays with Q20 and the problem never occured again.

That's why I don't let Audi wash my car or the engine, I am not going to let some guy stand with pressure hose and knock out stuff from my engine...

Hi Wild 1.8T,

Do you mind giving me the part no. again of the DV you put into your car...I think it was an original Bosch unit from Audi but I remember you said it was the 1 from the TT...should be compatible with my B5 1.8T '98, right ????
