I've got a problem with my A3 1.8t, maybe someone can help. It first started at idle - it had this sort of stop/ start misfire, then while driving recently at about 2000-3000rpm, the engine would miss through the rev range and then suddenly dissapear and reappear maybe hours or days later. I suspected the plug leads and took it to Alpine Audi. They hooked it up to the machine and then replaced the "temperature sender". Couple days later, problem reappeared. Took it to Audi Umhlanga and they said its the "diverter valve" thats faulty - had it replaced( lost that dumping noise!). A day later this morning engine miss reappeared - much worse( car viabrating!). Phoned Umhlanga, they reckon they checked car comprehensively and no faults registered on the machine. I then drove it there( missing and viabrating all the way)- when i reached there it ran perfectly! I took a mechanic for a spin and it reappeared for a while( mechanic acknowledged) and then ran perfectly. Booked in for Tommorow. Mechanic seemed baffled - says he even cleaned throttle bodies.
Car is standard besides BMC panel filter - 110 000kays on clock. They say its not the leads - tested it...?

It could be a faulty MAF or a faulty coilpack

My guess would be a faulty MAF......from my research they said that it doesn't always appear on the VAG tests as faulty.

Deon, sounds like coil packs, but there should be some errors, ask them to run a full electrical check on the car , it takes about 1.5 hours but should come up with some fault they can test seperate components.. if you have no luck contact me...

My car is still at Audi Umhlanga. They phoned me today and told me they checked the MAF and it is o.k. Also he told me that the coil packs on my model does'nt give any problems(99 A3t), just the later models like from 2001-2003. He says the spark plugs fitted to the car is incorrect!!!( Car is on motorplan and was last serviced by Barons in PMB i think)
Anyways they are currently doing a full service, and i've asked them to drive it everyday in this week to make sure the problems gone.
