Hi, I would like to know at what mileage does the cambelt on my 1991 Audi 500 Turbo needs to be replaced, some books say every 60.000Km others say 120.000Km. Please help.

On my S2 (same engine with a 20V head) you need to change the cam belt every 60,000 km.

better to do it sooner than leave it. The cost of the cambelt is only a few hundred rand as opposed to a good couple of thousand to repair the engine if the belt snaps.

I agree With a cambelt is always better to be more conservative as it is pretty expensive replacing all the valves!

Cam belt for a 10v recently purchased at under R30 from Alert Engine spares in CPT.

The generic parts that are available are just as good as the parts supplied by the agents. Half the time they are made by in the same factory. Just marketed under a different name as the agents do not allow sales direct to trade. Parts such as bearings, CV joints, brake rotors, discs, clutches, electical parts, etc are all examples.

Agents price for Fuel pump for Jetta - R3000. Same pump (Bosch) obtained for R995.

Secondly, is the 10v motor not free running? ie valves can never be hit by a piston? I also assume the 500 turbo is the 10v and not the 20v version as yes that will be more than just expensive.
