A report in Germany's "Autobildd und Sport" magazine quoted a reliable source from Munich as saying that BMW was considering putting an end to all current and future production of their now legendary M3 sports car.
Hanz Aprihlinder was reported to have said in a candid interview with journalists earlier this week, that "The race for horsepower and absolute performance is becoming a non-event for us. We at BMW have seen what the competition has to offer and have taken a high level board decision to concentrate on our more traditional vehicle lines. With Audi now producing turbo charged all-wheel drive vehicles which surpass even the most demanding enthusiasts' needs and our current technological capabilities, it is neither profitable nor in our best interests to try and match the never ending advances in ultra high performance saloons."
Mr Aprihlinder hinted at BMW concentrating on a new enlarged range of off-road capable SUV's and smaller compact saloons, in a strategic hope that more market share could be gained in an effort to make up for lost ground in the ruthlessly competitive sports car arena.
Audi GmbH did not give an official response but mentioned they would be saddened by the loss of competition in a market which they now admittedly dominate.
