OT: Equilibrium, go buy the DVD, it's good

Bandit Princess Muran

Hi, yeah. I wanted to post something in here cos it's so quiet and Boo seems to have fallen off the edge of the world (He might have gotten taken away to a house, with a book and a cat who's actually a goddess of love.) (If you didn't get that last comment, go read "The Redemption of Althalus". The main character is very Autolycus. You'll like it. I assure you.)

But I digress.

I wanted to take a moment to pimp the movie "Equilibrium". If you liked "Matrix", you'll enjoy this movie. Which is not to say they are the same movie. At first glance it might seem like it, with the futuristic scenery, action sequences and seemingly human, yet seemingly superhuman protagonist.

However, the storyline is completely different, with its own mythology and completely different religious symbolisms.

Plus, because the budget was much smaller than Matrix (I believe it was 20 million?), all the action sequences didn't have the excessive special effects. Which actually makes the action extra yummy.

Which brings me to one of the coolest bits of the movie. Gun-kata. Holy crap, it's the best thing I've ever seen. I don't think a martial art has ever been created for a movie before. Basically, Gun-kata is an art which uses the gun as an extension of your hands and, through mathematical/statistical calculations, enables the user to pick the one spot that is best during a shoot out, thereby allowing them 100% victory in every battle.

Yes. Gun-kata rules.

Wot also rules is the katana fights.

and the puppy.

LOL, did I even tell you guys wot the movie was about before I started drooling over the hotness that is Christian Bale doing Gun-kata?

Basically, the movie is about a not-so-distant future, in which war and all the nastiness of humankind has been eradicated through the outlawing of human emotion. This is achieved through the using of Prozium, which is taken 5 times a day, thru injection by everyone in the world. Thus, everyone alive is turned into little mindless automatons. This is strictly enforced by the leader of this new world, The Father, and his helpers, the Gammatron Clerics. They clean up anything that might be seen as a "sense offense" (read: burn), like books, art, colourful shiny things/people. There is a very passionate resistance group who don't take Prozium, and the Clerics try to clean them out.

The protagonist is played by Christian Bale. He plays the highest ranked cleric (Whose name escapes me, John P--something...) The movie revolves around how he is forced to challenge wot he was taught, in addition to his feelings/emotions, when he forgets a dose of Prozium one morning.

It's interesting to note how they use colour in the setting to gradually show this change in his character. It's subtle, but it's cool.

Moreover, the music is also very cool. There's one scene where Bale is being interrogated and I just thought the music there was great. simulated a heartbeat mixed with techo-ish music I thought. Very neat.

omg, I can't stop gushing about this movie. It's so good. And for once I'm not gushing about it, because of the eye candy or anything. While Christian Bale is muy caliente, shrug you don't really notice because you're too wrapped up in the movie. and the, omg, GUN-KATA ^_^

So yeah, I'll stop pimping now.

Go rent it. I assure you, you'll love it. It, ironically, stirs many an emotion during viewage.

:D Kay! I'll shush now :D

So...when's the next 'toly installment, Boo? ^_^

(on a semi related note, my Bandit Princess Muran character for the GURPS campaign I'm in is doing so well. Hasn't died yet ^_^ She did fall out of a tree doing acrobatics tho. Very Muran ^_^)

Gun-fu rocks, in any form. In this flick it's as though someone applied Logic to shooting akimbo. John Woo would be proud. I think the plot is obviously very reminiscent of Brave New World, minus all the fancy helicopters. I think Equillibrium Christian Bale should go pistol-whip American Psycho Christian Bale. Fucking yuppie.
