Response to ok this is great. #4

Very nice bob thank you I have a million more questions but Ill keep it brief

Q - #4 In schutzhund we introduced the sleeve as a prey item by throwing it around or tricking the dog into biting it. Usually I have seen this done with a burlap sack that the dog knows and loves to bite then that sack is thrown on a sleeve right before the dog bites.
How do you introduce to the dog that it can bite the suit?

A - The progression is rag to tug to jambier (leg sleeve) to suit. Many of the exercises including outs can be done on the leg sleeve.

Q - What age do you do live bites on the suit?

A - When the dog is ready which means biting well on the leg sleeve and outing well. If you start from a puppy at 8 weeks he can be on the suit as early as 9 to 10 months.

Q - Is the suit used like a tug or toy, without a man inside, for awhile?

A - It can be but this is not necessary for very long.

Q - Also what does it say about a dogs character if he grabs the decoy with his front paws before biting?

A - This says two things to me. Was his training correct and I don't believe that the dog trusts his jaws. To me it says nothing about his character. But each dog must be assessed, I am only generalizing on this question.

Regards

Bob
