Response to I know that alot of houses were attached to barns in southern Italy.

 

Do you mean that the barn was next to the house? I know that f.e. in Portugal, in the north, farms were constructed with a ground floor were the animals were kept and a first floor were the living quarters were. In this way the heat from the animals would rise up towards the first floor and help keep the farmer and family warm during the winter.
