My grandfather's house was like this .The heat generated mby the animals kept families warm. My grandfather grew up in Calabria in the 20,30s.I think I have a few pics of Calabrian homesteads.I'll have to look..

Do you mean that the barn was next to the house? I know that f.e. in Portugal, in the north, farms were constructed with a ground floor were the animals were kept and a first floor were the living quarters were. In this way the heat from the animals would rise up towards the first floor and help keep the farmer and family warm during the winter.

Hi Cody,
TIME CAST ( Battlefield terrain concepts ) has got the references you're so desperately looking for.
After many years of wargaming and designing wargaming terrain, Battlefield Terrain Concepts came into existence in April 1998. They strive to provide the most realistic and playable wargaming terrain possible.
They have a large selection buildings and accessories in 6mm, 10mm and 15mm scales.I know that this is too small for you, but at least you will have an idea how they looked like in '44.
They have in their range 4: buildings from Southern Europe, including Italy, the Spanish peninsular, the French Mediterranean coast, Greece, Turkey and the Mediterranean islands (Sicily, Malta and Crete).
Every farmhouse, barn, house, chapel is descripted, village, region, etc,....
