Hi all,

Here's a shot of a figure I've recently finished. He's a DAK officer in 1/35 scale from the Korean manufacturer, SOL, painted in oils over acrylics:

I modified the stock figure by lowering the left arm (the original pose had him touching the brim of his cap) and adding the map, binoculars and binocular strap.

As always, any comments are appreciated.

Cheers,

Brian

It's good to see your work again. I like how you gave this guy that "sun burned, sun bleached" look. Well done! Dave

Dave,

Thanks for the kind words - I'm glad you like him. I did use ALOT of the colours mixed with white or tan to bleach out the uniform colours. My usual flesh mix is based on Burnt Sienna which yields a reddish tone as is, so I guess he really is "sunburnt(sienna)" ! Anyway, here's a few other views of the same guy - enjoy !

Cheers,

Brian

you've done any excellent job!

If you don't mind me asking what colours did you use to start with(base colour). I'm going to be painting some DAK figures myself soon and am having a hard time with a colour to start with.....I know that the colours varied alot but I just need an idea where to start with a base colour.

Any help would be great

Bart

Bart,

Thanks for the kind compliments - much appreciated.

In response to your question, I base coated the figure with acrylic "folk art" craft paints (Plaid brand, I think - big spender ! ). As for colours, I custom mixed them using Ron Volstad's artwork in the recent Rottman and Volstad book, "Blitzkrieg" (Concord, 2005) as a rough guide.

I think the jacket was a combination of Burnt Umber and Yellow, with a bit of Burnt Sienna, White and Black to make a darkish khaki on the yellowish side (sorry I can't be more specific, I just played around on the palette until it looked "right"). The shorts were a greenish khaki made from mixing Yellow and Black to make an olive green colour, then I added more White to lighten it, and a bit of Burnt Sienna to "brown it" a bit (really scientific, eh ?). I then went ahead and did my oil shading and highlighting using approximately the same colours and combinations of W&N oils, again all mixed "by eye" using Volstad's artwork.

Luckily for us, as you say, the DAK colours varied quite a bit, so the precise colours are not so crucial.

Apologies for the vagueness of the mixes, but I really am this "slap-dash" when it comes to mixing colours - I just play around until it "looks right" according to my references (and you can't go wrong using Volstad's artwork !)

I hope this helped a bit.

Cheers,

Brian

This one's a winner! Makes me want to break out a box of DAK figures I have and paint 'em up. Thanks for the additional pictures. They look terrific. Dave

"we have nothing to fear but fear itself" (apologies to FDR for trivializing the quote !) Perhaps a better one is my personal painting credo, "It's not how well you paint the first time... it's how well you touch up afterwards !"

Cheers,

Brian
