A pinwash is a wash that is used just to accent a certain area, like around rivets or in a crease; a normal wash covers the whole vehicle. A normal wash is a heavier mix of paint to thinner, maybe 80% thinner 20% paint. It is used to simulate shadows. A filter is much more diluted, about 95% thinner and 5% paint. Filters are used over the vehicle to alter or fade paint and/or unify camoflage schemes.
By all means, read the above link to Mig's articles, they are all wonderful. Feel free to ask any more questions, HTH.
Cheers-
