UN 1846 and water resistanceOctober 8 2003 at 4:04 AM

I have a Ulysse Nardin 1846 Marine Chronometer and wanted to know how "tight" one must screw down the crown in order to achieve water resistance. Being an engineer, I use the philosophy, "the tigher the better" however as I screw in the crown until it can not move anymore (and then an additional attempt at one more turn), I feel like I am going to snap the crown right off the watch or strip the threads. How does one know when to stop without comprimising the water resistant seal?
Thnak you very much for your help.
