When NSU released it nearly fourty years ago, it was such a radical departure from the then established and common design and technical principles that it was considered a "freak" - and failed to become a success:

Nobody would believe that this car was presented in 1967! It was too revolutionary, in the truest sense of the word (since the Wankel engine is rotating) for the taste of the masses, and the teething engine's problems - that eventually were overcome - compromised the company's reputation. After NSU was sold to Audi, the Ro 80 massively influenced the brand's design of the Audi 100 - twenty years later! Then the time was ready for it, and it was successful:
